As the thread title suggests. This is the place to discuss anything to do with Supermarkets and retail.

I can't believe it has taken this long for Amazon to even launch in Australia! Just goes to show how far behind we are in comparison to the rest of the world. To be honest, I don't think it will become as popular here as it is in the US. The fact that many people have criticised the site already, is enough evidence to suggest that it won't really take off. It will be popular, but not the same extent.

I’ve read lots of interesting comments since the launch last week (some valid and others just plain ridiculous). I mean, some have already called the whole exercise an epic fail by Amazon, which is a bit silly I reckon (lots of these based solely off the uncompetitive pricing, range etc.). I think how they will operate this will be viewed as a long-term slow build and not short-term one. At the moment traditional B&M have nothing to worry about with the mostly higher prices in some categories currently, but in the coming months/years this will more than likely not be the case and they will be considerably cheaper by comparison (will never be Amazon US cheap but that’s to be expected obviously).

I agree. The pure fact that the launch has generated a lot of publicity in the media, means that it definitely isn't a failure by any means. At the end of the day, more competition is only beneficial for customers.

Yeah, and they have generated all of this publicity by not saying anything. Wonder what would happen if they announced something major? 😛

I'm a bit surprised that Frank Lowy is selling his Westfield assets. It was inevitable that he was going to sell the shopping centre at some point, but I didn't think it would be so soon.

Apple reveals plans for Melbourne’s Federation SquareApple today previewed its planned flagship project in Melbourne’s Federation Square, introducing a design concept that complements the original vision for the precinct, increases public space and provides a daily program of activity to inspire and educate the community. Made possible through a partnership with Federation Square and the Victorian Government, Apple Federation Square will be powered entirely by renewable energy, create over 200 new Apple positions and support several hundred construction jobs.

Although the new plan opens up Federation Square to the Yarra, I am not sure if it is a good idea to have a public space commercialised. Also, going by the artist’s impression, it will totally out of place in Fed Square IMO.
What do others think of this?

Fed Square doesn't need to be commercialised, it's almost like a landmark for Melbourne which always has many international and domestic visitors, i'm sure they too wouldn't like to see a huge Apple store within the heart of it.

I agree with both of you. I've been to Federation Square on a couple of occasions and I agree that it would look very out of place if it was built. Hopefully the proposal won't go ahead.

It would be just as stupid as them proposing to build a store in Salamanca (in case you’re not aware it’s a precinct of Hobart on the waterfront). That too would stick out like a sore thumb - probably even more so surrounded by sandstone buildings, unless they wanted to knock them down instead! ).

Hopefully the proposal won't go ahead.Unfortunately, money talks. From what I understand they have been eyeing off a site to build a mega “flagship” store for a decade or more. And looks certain it will go ahead, no matter how it looks. An aerial view: Artists' impression of the new Apple store, showing its location on the river side.
