Word of mouth isn't gospel. Entertainment weekly can say theirs pigs falling out of the sky, doesn't make it the truth. People hype it up as the next big thing because rock hasn't been popular since the 00s and many people are desperate for it to become mainstream again. When they see a pop punk song hit #1 they're obviously going to go nuts and jump on the hype train. But when you look at the receipts, only one pop punk song objectively did well this year with no others being able to even get into the top 40. If they were streamed so much then youtube views and chart positions would reflect this. www.varsity.co.uk/music/219589 MILLION views>9 MILLION views Lmfao exactly my point

>9 MILLION views Lmfao exactly my point You acting like this is Adele lets try MGK... Tickets to My Downfall debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 all-format albums chart, moving 126,000 album equivalent units in its first week.[59] This debut became the highest of his career to date, tripling the opening numbers for his prior album, Hotel Diablo in 2019, So flash forward to Papercuts the music video in 2021, it only got 8.5 M views, yet closed the MTV VMAS ? If MGK is not pop culture how can he close MTV's 2021 flagship awards show ? the VMAS were opened by a pop punk song with Olivia and closed by a pop punk song ( MGK). Also you are hearing pop punk songs in commercials as well. You going to act like that has no effect on anything ? Clearly its seeping in culture and becoming a thing.

Lets get back to the topic.
It's hard to say which year of the 2010s is a shift because every year seemed changeful. I'm gonna go with 2012. It just seemed like an extension of 2011 culture but with a more hipster/indie twist.

2010 and 2019 equally.
2010 had some minor noticeable decade identity and aesthetic related changes in general and at some point in the middle and towards 2011 (logo/ some visual graphics, fashion modifications, ipads) but was mostly a generic and ambiguous extension of late 2009.
2019 had a few minor changes/signs (some music, some fashion relevant to new trends in the present, less core culture as a full year compared to 18 etc) that mostly pop out a bit in retrospect and latter 2021, but it like felt another stereotypical and recycled late 2010s year overall.
Wouldn't say 2014. A lot of stuff from 2013 was in the process of blossoming throughout the year and the end part was like an early sample/blueprint of a number of late 2010s things (subdued aesthetics/fashion, alt right content, late phase hipster/yuccie style etc)
Wouldn't say 2012. First half of 2012 added some final touches to core 2010s identity, that were mostly finished in 2011. Latter 2012 half was pointed towards the mid 2010s, even if it wasn't the era yet, and it was forming the early building blocks of what would turn out to be the mid 2010s.

The Arab Spring that started in 2010 really affected the rest of the decade.
The Arab Spring led to the Syria civil war which led to the rise of ISIS which led to the rise of terrorism which led to more panic and radicalized political views.
So it was definitely an important year politically, almost on par with 2001 for the 2000s.

Most of that was undergoing in 2011 and 2012 and it finished in 2012. 2011 is much more transitional politically with OBL dead and the Iraq War over, Occupy Wall Street which was the start of all the big liberal protests/movements of the 2010s as well as the Mark Duggan riots in london which is kind of a foreshadowing to the BLM movement even if the Trayvon Martin case was the one that kicked off BLM.

Holy f, i never realized this Interesting to think that one man setting himself on fire in 2011 might have been the catalyst to Trump getting elected in 2016

You could argue the very early part had an extended 2016 vibe in a few different ways and a feeling of still not being officially in the trump era, despite him winning along with the pessimism, divisions, alt right in the mainstream reaching more of a turning point at the end of 2016. For the most part the remaining early part of 2017, middle, end overall seem pretty consistent across all things.
