What early part of other decades would you compare with the early 20s in terms of transition? It is definitely not the early 2010s and to some extent the early 2000s.

The closest i'd say is the early 80s it was a quick shift into the culture of that decade with disco dying off, reagan getting elected and aids crisis in the first two years of the decade.

EDM stopped being the most popular dance genre in mid 2019 similar to disco in mid 1979 too, but Hip Hop stays around like Rock did in the 80s. Kind of a stretch but the AIDs epidemic in the early 80s could be compared to COVID as well.

Early 1970s would be my best guess. I’m unsure how culture played out in the early 1970s, but my guess would be that they had a lot of lingering 1960s trends, even more so than the early 1980s and early 1990s having 1970s and 1980s trends, respectively. In online forums, I’ve read that the early 1970s were an extension of 1960s culture. 1980s and 1990s established their identity quickly around 1981-1982 and 1989-1990 respectively. Whereas for the 1970s, it may have taken until 1973-1974 for the 1970s to become their own. Now in the early 2020s, we still have a lot of lingering 2010s trends. Just because COVID happened, PS5 got released and we got a new president, doesn’t mean 2010s influences are 100% extinct. tbf 0-3 years normally have a lot of holdovers from the previous decade, especially the 0 and 1 years. 2010s culture kicked off pretty quickly by 2011 and 2000s culture was completely gone by 2013, but that doesn't mean every decade will be like that. The 1980s and 2010s are both examples of decades that kicked off really quickly and held on well into the next decade (I've heard people say that 80s holdovers lasted as far as 1994).

I also disagree with 70s forming in 1973. More like 1971/72.

Early 1930s.
From this list I'd say early '90s since music is most similar to that right now. However, the ONLY decade of the 20th century that compares to the 2020s is the 1930s.

EDM stopped being the most popular dance genre in mid 2019 similar to disco in mid 1979 too Nope. Not when MJ's "Off the Wall", one of biggest disco albums of all time, was released in the second half of the year and spawned many huge hits. Disco only started really declining well into 1980 and lingered into 1981. But even as late as 1983, you could hear some slight classic disco influences in pop music and new wave. "Say Say Say", the weird MJ and Paul McCartney collab, for example comes to mind.

Early 80s. Both the early 20s and early 80s began with a new president being elected and a disease spreading across the world (COVID and HIV respectively). Also synth pop is popular in both time periods, although for the early 20s it’s just throwback music but still. Also, maximalism starts to become popular in the early 80s and early 20s. I’ve always felt like the 1980s and 2020s kinda mirrored each other in a way. The 80s were pretty bizarre and the 2020s are looking like it will be too

Early 1970s, 1970-most of 1971 is essentially the same as 1969, the 70s become more of their own thing around late 1971-1973. The 80s by 1981 were pretty much 80s with 70s holdovers, and the 90s aesthetic was already leading in 1989-1990 despite a lot of late 80s influence. 2001, even parts of the 2000, felt firmly 2000s. I don't think the 2020s decade identity been fully formed yet, I would still say are in the 2010s, just a slightly modified version of 2019 with Covid. Something has to change by 2022 and 2023.

Hence why I personally regard 1984-1987 as the peak years of the 80s, in much the same way 2005-2006 were the peak 2000s years, and, well basically just 1994 for the 90s LMAO.
