If we compare the decades where Hip Hop was huge to the decades where Rock was huge, it'll look something like this:
1970s = 1940s (not popular yet, but the genre starts here)
1980s = 1950s 1990s = 1960s 2000s = 1970s 2010s = 1980s 2020s = 1990s
2030s = 2000s
This means we are in rap's equivalent to rock's early 90s right now. I wonder what Hip Hop's equivalent to Nu-Metal will be...

They seem to be stuck with trap.

So rap is gonna lose its popularity in the early 2040s and experience a small revival in the early 2050s

Everything is still feels rooted in mid 2000s in someway, it really needs to break away from that.

The earliest Drill in Chicago was 2010/2011 and the earliest Drill in NYC was 2013/2014. And even then 2019-2021+ Drill sounds very different from 2011-2014 Drill.

It’s divorced from mid 2000s for sure but it still feels evolved from it/ 2000s in general to some extent . Would be interesting if we just reset the current template for mainstream pop-hip hop and numerous genres and start from total scratch. There was a bigger diving line between music genres eras in the past imo.

I wonder if trap is a derivative of the snap/ringtone rap sound of the mid to late 2000s. I agree that all music genres need a serious reset or reboot. Now they seem to all blend together. Hopefully rock and pop punk really come back, stand out on their own and not just be blended in with hip-hop. Even in the 2000s, a bigger dividing line between music genres existed. Maybe that’s true for the early 2010s to some extent. Somewhere in the mid to late 2010s that got lost. Strange how that almost lines up perfectly with counter cultures.

Late 10s rap sounds absolutely nothing like Mid 00s rap For late 10s rap in general it’s also fair to say on the surface it clearly sounds different and obviously not mid 2000s or 2000s. The base root is still 2000s/mid 2000s in general. I can’t say the root is 80s or most of the 90s, even though trap has it's earliest origins in the 90s, it came into its proper form and became popular first in the 2000s, between the early to mid period, drill is also a subgenre of trap that later emerged. I'm talking about the root sound, not saying the current artists are identical to what was made earlier.

Yeah pretty much 2010s indeed branched out out 2000s rap. I feel that trap is strongly influenced and rooted in the snap/ringtone rap of the mid and late 2000s and 2000s trap. I don’t get the denial.

The original trap sound is rooted in Dirty South which existed since the 90s actually. It has not really anything to do with snap besides coming from the Southern States. While 2003 was the first time when the term "trap" (which means a drug-related place) was used to refer to music (which was mostly Dirty South tracks about drugs). It wasn't until the early 2010s that the modern understanding of trap music really started to take shape (hi-hats + 808s + sub bass + triplet flow). It should also be noted that trap at this point is quite a huge category, and many styles and substyles fall under it (drill, Chicago bop, the SoundCloud sound and so on).

Dirty South isn’t the same as Trap. Which is not something I said.
