Trap was really mainstream(or at least it peaked) in 2017-2020.

This is apparently the oldest trap song:
As you can hear, this is pretty much just Dirty South about the trap (drugs), not really full-blown trap music yet. But I guess you can thank T.I. for the eventual birth of trap music.
Apparently also "proto-trap" from 2006 which is a little more accurate since the use of 808s and beats more closely matches later trap, but as you can see the genre still a LOT to grow before becoming modern trap.
2010 was around the time I think proto-trap started to transition into full-blown trap music, and you can clearly hear it here. Despite this, it's still very dancy and catchy, similar to a lot of 2000s club rap and a few things are missing.
Trap in 2012 was almost done its mutation. Future added the slow pace, reverb and eliminated the club-music feeling which definitely served as template for later trap.
Meanwhile still in 2012, Chief Keef perfects that big bassy, gritty beat that's really key to modern day trap.
Trap's mutation to become a full-blown genre that lasted almost a decade was finally completed by 2013. Migos introduced the triplet flow, and most trap from now on fill follow more or less this form.
