Smartphones have stagnated. They've hardly evolved since like 2017. You can only make something so sleek or big.. We're in 2021. Why would you already make these types of conclusions when we're only 2 years away from the 2010s? Unless you have a magic ball that can predict the future of technology, let's have this conversation in 2029 or even the early 2030s when it will actually matter.

I disagree. The 2010s will be remembered as a carefree, innocent time of excess compared to the hell on earth and culture of suffering that is the 2020s, similar to the 1920s vs the 30s. If the USA has a civil war or authoritarian takeover this decade (one or the other is almost certain unless something changes), that perception will be even stronger. 2010s were only remotely innocent in the first half and i wouldnt exactly say it was a time of excess since you had a crappy economy back then. The second half was a cesspool. ISIS terrorist attacks, SJWs vs Alt-Right, Nazi rallies, etc. School shootings were very frequent this decade too. The 20s politically is really just the late 10s on steroids with COVID. And it feels like you keep exaggurating about how there is going to be a civil war or coup. Only like 500 people showed up on Jan 6th. The early 2010s had a bad economy, but it was nothing compared to the 2020s. It's like comparing 2008 with 2001. It's an entirely different ballgame. The economy came back nicely in the mid 2010s and there were several great years. I can't see us being so lucky this time. As for civil war, maybe only 500 people showed up, but most Republicans are defending the events of January 6th and Trump's actions on that day. Trump is likely to run for President again and win. Most Republicans believe and are promoting the lie that Donald Trump did in fact win the 2020 election despite the fact there's no evidence of fraud or machines switching votes. He lost the election, refused to concede, and orchestrated an insurrection but half the country thinks that's just fine because abortion is getting banned. Right now, political and cultural momentum heavily favors the Republicans, conservatism, Trump, and religion. It's the most backwards time in history since the Jim Crow era.

That's 4 years where there has been very little improvement to smartphones. Compare this to 2015 smartphones where the charge speed is much sloer, the UI is visually outdated, nowhere near as powerful and the phones are smaller with bezels, etc.

Smartphones and social media are still able to evolve in the next 8 years you know... They're not gonna be stuck in their 2010s forms for eternity. The 50s are defined by the widespread popularization of TV, and yet TVs are still with us (more or less). That doesn't make the 50s TV landscape identity-less. Smartphones have stagnated. They've hardly evolved since like 2017. You can only make something so sleek or big. I don't see fold phones taking off either it's pointless and overly expensive. Social Media may change with the metaverse. most of the difference is that phones released after 2020 have a pinhole camera instead of a Notch (well, except Apple for whatever reason)

But you know what people mean when they say 2010s Hipster
like the image should be right in your head, people know exactly what that is, despite several variations, Hipster was the dominant sub culture of the 2010s, no matter which way or form you wanna slice it. Yes it has it's roots in the late 2000s but the 2010s is when it became a the dominant standard in commercials and music.

The biggest thing that defines the 2010s are social media and smartphones. Unless they somehow and very very unlikely go out of fashion then it wont have that unique identity anymore and will just be seen as a bridge between the 2000s and the 2020s. Yeah I agree with this, smartphones were largely associated with the decade because they were so new and exploded in popularity and evolved since from the beginning of the decade to now we’re it’s barley any noticiable differences. The 2020s will have smartphones from beginning to end unlike the 2010s when not that many people had and it wasn’t mandatory to have one even in work places

It’s been a thing since the 2000s and I don’t see that going away anytime soon

Pop culture itself is just more stagnant since the 1990s IMO. In 2021, 1995 is the same distance from now as 1969 was back then. That's crazy and proves this to me a lot.

I agree except for one thing. It died in March 2020. It may have been in decline in 2019 but it was still a very visible part of the culture and the zeitgeist was still very "urban."
