Looking at pictures from the mid 2000s and back, the lighting seemed a lot warmer and more inviting. Even from experience, walking into mall anchor department stores like Nordstrom, Macy’s, Younkers, Dillards, JCPenney, Von Maur, Sears, Mervyn’s, Gottschalks seemed more inviting with the warm lighting. I think the late 2000s and early 2010s were in between the warm inviting lighting and the sterile white “factory house” lighting. Ever since the mid 2010s, lighting seems whiter, colder and less inviting. I wonder if this is why brick and mortar retail is suffering.

Simon malls started changing the lighting of malls from 2009 onwards, as well as the actual coat of paint inside the mall as well. A Good majority of these adjustments were made around 2015. All mall logos were removed and replaced with Simon's stock font.

I remember the circa 2008 obsession with halogen lights in retail stores.
