This was the follow up single to “Like A Prayer” (a more 80s sounding song to me) and both songs were popular in 1989 when they came out.
The video version, which I think is the default version, sounds a little more 90s. Not too separated from “Vogue” a year later and that song was pretty 90s. This sounds more electronic and like early 90s house music
This version from the album however sounds a little bit more 80s with the louder percussion, more synths, and actual instruments like the guitar. Also I think the vocals are pretty “80s” too I guess.

Also I think the vocals are pretty “80s” too I guess. Both songs sound very early 90s. It doesn't doesn't go past 1991-1992, maybe early 93 but that's stretching it. Lots of music in mid-late 1989 started sounding 100 percent very early 90s even if it wasn't everything, it felt that music was largely leaning 90s, even though 1988 was getting there by the end. Both versions have some small amount of typical/core minor 80s elements, the album version more but its not overpowering the 90s sound or sticking out enough. The single, remix and music video were released in mid 1989, album version recorded in 1988 and released in early 1989. Most house, lots of pop, rock and hip hop music earlier across the very late 80s (1988 and 1989) established the very early 90s sound very quicky, so a lot of its very interchangeable, when its not interchangeable sometimes the only difference is when more 80s typical/core 80s sounds have a stronger yet not overpowering balance in 90s sounding songs, making it more late 80s, compared to the very early 90s when there was a reduction of this. If the 80s sound is overpowering the 90s sound, or just sounds like a upgraded mid 80s songs, its the earlier late 80s, which is really mid 80s part 2 (late 1986 to mid 1988, even though there are exceptions within the time frame ex some songs in 1987 sounding very late 80s or 90s, mid 80s sounding hits popular in 88-89) I would say early late 1980s (either late 1986 or 87 to early 88) and the last phase of the early 90s (late 1992 to early 1994) really wouldn't have song like this, it would feel out of place. Like a prayer by contrast sounds like a mid to late 80s song, it was a massive hit but seems more fitting in year like 1986 than 1989, and it was released a bit before that in early 1989.

It sounds very late 80s to me. Nothin' 90s about it. This is slightly off topic, but music in 1988 and 89 were still VERY 80s. I remember it well. I don't know why some people say that music from 88-89 sounds 90s...it doesn't. I know this for sure. I was there.😉

Madonna’s songs sounds 90s. I think 1988 and 1989 having many 1990s-sounding hits is widely accepted across music reviews, articles and so on, despite very 1980s-sounding music around. I think Slashpop did an amazing job picking out songs that sound 1990s or could exist at some point then for the most part. I don't think you contributed to that post, speaks volumes. First of all, him and few regular remembers are literally a few years younger than you. You have no position to assume people’s ages, use the “I'm older” card use these measures on distinguishing decade sounds. That’s arrogant, disrespectful, and ridiculous. Just because you were 8 or 9 does not make 1988 and 1989 more late 1980s whatsoever, or that you are an expert, cared or necessarily exposed to all music genres. I don’t think anyone stated that lots of very 1980s music didn’t exist in all of 1988 and 1989, but a good range of very big hits that definitely pass for 1990s in the late 1980s that were blueprints for the 1990s sound and would bleed over. Sounds like you need to listen to more music to determine how the genres are similar and are seeking attention with this obnoxious post. You don’t seem to have a very thorough understanding of the 1980s and 1990s based on your post.
