2018 was just one of those nothing burger years awaiting arrival of an eventful year, like it had to be boring on purpose or something Ironic since 2008 was a very eventful year and people were expecting 2018 to be very eventful as well. thats why I always say just because a year has the same number does not mean it's going to follow the same pattern.

2019 rap was really different from 2017 rap outside of a few examples. It was more melodic thanks to Juice WRLD and Astroworld influence. Ironically Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" is one of the 2019 rap songs that could've been in 2017. Probably the last stereotypical SoundCloud-sounding rap song I can think of before TikTok vibes took over. Most 2019 rap hits in the top 50 aren't melodic and sounds like generic trap rap that could release in 2018. Melodic rap wasn't as big in 2019 as it is today, but it was definitely on the come-up after Juice WRLD and Astroworld started the change in late 2018.

True but mumble rap heavily dominated over it in 2019

TikTok blew up in November-December 2018, i remember it
The 10s-20s transition era isn't as obvious as the other eras, we just jumped right into the 20s once covid hit
Ngl, the aesthetic of early 2022 isn't even very different from the aesthetic of early 2017, still cold, muted, downbeat, hiphop-influenced, post-ironic

Aesthetically speaking? The Wes anderson/muted aesthetic that is big today was already popular back then and people already used shitty fake late-90s camcorder filters back then

There is a reason why in my May 2019 mood board you saw electric highlighter yellow/Green as a dominant color. The muted colors of Yeezy season was phased out pretty quickly once we got to 2018 and 2019.

Back in march you didn't have BLM riots, Biden being elected, Capitol hill riots, Vaccine rollout and 9th gen gaming. Nothing much happened after Jan 2021 on the other hand. January was the final touches on setting up early 20s culture, all of 2020 is transitional.

Fall 2018 had a little bit of a different vibe from 2016/2017 that grew in 2019. Basically I start it with TikTok getting popular and end it with Joe Biden's inauguration and vaccine rollouts. Q4 2018 to Q2 2019 and Q2 2020 to Q1 2021 are overlap periods, the core part was Q3 2019 to Q1 2020.

By Feb and early March 2020 Paranoia was already setting in public places with people acting afraid and putting their shirt over their mouth, stores started doing hand sanitizer at this time as well, as in it was right next to the door as you walk in. By March stores were already closing down.
