Any aspect you can think of, quality, selection, etc.
Macy’s - The store seemed classier back in the 2000s and to some extent the early 2010s. They seemed like the most crowded anchor department store in the mall. The merchandise seemed unique or of higher quality. They seemed to be opening stores left and right, swallowing up other brands.
But now a days most of the stuff you find in Macy’s you can find in other discount stores or retailers. Going into Macy’s doesn’t feel that special anymore. The products seem cheap. Now it’s easier to find parking. They seem to be closing stores left and right since 2016, maybe earlier.
JCPenney - The store seemed respectable back in the 2000s and very early 2010s. They’d always offer sales and discounts on great quality products. The stores seemed fuller with merchandise.
November 2011 is when JCP went downhill after they appointed Ron Johnson. That’s when they remodeled stores to look like separate boutiques, added fair and square pricing, got rid of sales and discounts. The stores became emptier of products. This drove customers away. The CEO has changed since and JCP has gotten rid of Fair and Square pricing, brought back sales and discounts, but the stores still look the same. They’ve been struggling and have not returned to where they once were. They even filed bankruptcy and have been closing many stores.
Kmart - They brought too many companies in the 1980s and maybe early 1990s. They should’ve put all their attention on growing their Super Kmart business instead of abandoning it and focusing on stupid concepts like Big Kmart. I can’t say I feel sorry for them. They never stood for anything or had a clear identity like Target and Walmart. I’d say they peaked in the 1970s or 1980s, maybe early 1990s. Ever since the mid 1990s, then went downhill. Of course their business came crashing down in 2002 when they filed for bankruptcy.
Toys R Us - The 2005 leveraged buyout by Bain really fucked them over big time and came to bite them in the ass in 2018 when they closed everywhere except Canada. I guess the writing was on the wall when in 1998, Walmart surpassed them as the number 1 toy retailer. In 2000, their deal with Amazon didn’t go well. A lot of toys could be purchased at Target or Walmart. Toys R Us seemed like the expensive place for toys. They didn’t invest in their stores, remodeling, experiences, etc. But how could they since they were in debt because of the buyout.
Disney Stores - They peaked in the 1990s with the Disney Renaissance era. They’ve been slowly declining since the 2000s with lackluster films. Their merchandise became less and cheap quality, could be found in other stores. They closed so many stores in 2021.
Carl’s Jr - I haven’t been there since 2015. But my goodness their food wasn’t nearly as tasty as it was just years earlier. Portion sizes decreased, while the prices increased.
Long John Silvers - I can’t remember when the last time was I ate there. See Carl’s Jr.
Burger King - I haven’t been there since 2016. See Carl’s Jr.
Round Table Pizza - I used to enjoy going here until I found hair inside the pizza in 2020.
