I think 2008 was more conservative, like most the 2000s. It was still common for people, conservative and liberal, to be against gay marriage, which wasn’t even legal in all states yet in 2008. Kids still called each other f*ggots in school, lgbt and poc representation was nowhere near as much as 2016 or today. No one would be mad at Dave Chappelle or J.K Rowling for their transphobic statements like they would in 2016.
After Obama stepped into office in 2009 things started to shift more to the left in terms of public attitude and by 2016 we were most definitely liberal leaning in society with things like BLM, discussions around POC representation with #oscarssowhite, Caitlyn Jenner, lgbt movies like Moonlight, the early days of “Woke” and cancel culture being mainstream, and Trump backlash was mainstream even if he did end up winning the election

I was one of the people that called it. That doesn't mean this doesn't feel surreal. I knew he would crash the economy and I knew there would be some kind of ecological disaster that he would either be responsible for or worsen. What I didn't expect is for the GOP to be full-on supportive of a coup and imposing a theocracy.
