Stores just play whatever is popular on the radio for as long as I can remember.
One of the main reasons I dislike "Boom Boom Pow" because every freaking store played it to death back in 2009.

Department stores played smooth jazz. A lot of businesses played "soft rock" from the 70s and 80s. Nobody uses the term "soft rock" anymore but it typically consisted of people like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elton John, Hall and Oates, Rod Stewart, Whitney Houston, etc.
