Time for the BIG question 😈, all are worlds apart...
2022: hip hop, internet, computers, video games
1978: rock, pre-PC culture, pre-social media or smartphones, network TV, pre-9/11 or COVID

If I had to pick, I would say 2022. If there was no covid, then definitely 2022.

1995 was the year everything changed. The internet is the second fire. Or the third fire if electricity is the second. I would say electricity. I would say the internal combustion engine is up there pretty close with that as well. Going from horse and buggy to the automobile recreated society in ways that couldn't have been imagined by their inventors. Despite how much I love history, I don't think I would want to live in the age before the automobile.

We forget how insane it is that we are able to communicate in seconds with anyone across the world on magical rectangles.

I kind of miss the early Internet. Now everything is so consolidated and cookie cutter. Back then, you really could go down some rabbit holes.

If we're talking huge eras, I'd say for the past century it would be something like this.
1890-1945 (Post-industrial, pre-war) 1945-1994 (Cold War/Pre-Internet era) 1995-Present (Information Age)

To me what made me realize the old Internet was gone was the death of forums. There aren't many like this one around anymore. Everything has been replaced by social media or is on reddit. I would say the late '00s Internet kind of had the best of both worlds.

I did feel a noticeable decline in internet culture in the early 10s and since like 2013 it's just been completely soulless.

For me, it was when everything started being designed for use on a phone or a tablet rather than a PC. That was probably around 2013-14. The shift from the Internet as something you do on your PC vs something you have 24/7 in the palm of your hand really changed it.
