I think it’s a part 2 of his 2020 “Afterhours” album. I think he started heading in an upbeat direction between mid to late 2015 and 2018..

I don’t think he he started being “upbeat” until 2019/20 with his “After Hours” album. I listen to a lot of The Weeknd and his last few albums before 2020 weren’t really upbeat. He literally released an EP titled “My Dear Melancholy” in 2018. As for Dawn FM, I don’t like it or hate it

Getting tired of the 80s sound, it's just boring. It'd be cool if The Weeknd surprised everyone with some fresh R&B.

The rehashed 1980s sound is long in the tooth and is nothing new or unique to the early 2020s, despite an abundance of that music since late 2019 and 2020. It’s about time mainstream culture moves away from 1980s nostalgia. 1960s, 1970s, 1990s and first half of 2000s nostalgia should be explored more. They have a lot of cool cultural aspects to them, especially in terms of music. I’m surprised 1980s nostalgia outlasted that of the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s. I’m sure some R&B artists currently have fresher music than The Weeknd. I’d much rather listen to Summer Walker.

And tbh I don't even see The Weeknd as an R&B artist anymore, just a full on 80s throwback pop singer. It kinda sucks tbh.

I feel like The Weeknd sold out to 1980s throwback pop since late 2019 or 2020 and yes that sucks.
