Compared to the earlier decades, were the 1980s a step-down for horror films? Was it more commercialized than the 1960s or 1970s? I believe 1980s horror movies were iconic and influenced later horror films. How did people view the slasher films that were coming out during the 1980s? Did they get sick of them by the late 1980s?
I think the 1980s slasher movie trend could be traced back to the Halloween movie from 1978. When I first watched that movie, I could've sworn it came out between the second half of 1981 and Q1 1984 (the cultural early 1980s imo) or maybe I'm just bad with guessing dates lol.

As a young kid in the late 1980s and early 90s, I remember me and other kids would watch 80s slasher films while our parents weren't watching even if they were R, they even made nightmare on elm street and friday the 13th toys for toddlers and young children I remember seeing at toys R US. I remember playing friday the 13th on the nes in 1991 as well. Peak slasher films were late 70s to mid to late 80s, but they were still good until the like early 90s. Yes its true late 70s started the slasher thing, freddy, jason, micheal myers and horror franchise like hellraiser, evil dead, child's play and living dead series are so iconic every single year of the 2000s and 2010s-present has stores across north america that sell shirts, mugs, posters, figures and keychains of the movies. 70s to 80s horror movies were considered among the best and most iconic periods for both commercial and underground horror, horror started decling in the 90s around the mid to late 90s, 1995-1998, it got staler and safer, and worse in the late 90s onward, with exceptions and underground cinema.
