I’m guessing jazz or electronic music, maybe smooth r’n’b, anything relaxing and not upbeat.

I assumed shoe and sports stores played rap music and colorful bright teen stores like Sam Goody played upbeat pop music. I could expect to hear Britney Spears in 1999 in Sam Goody or teen girl stores. What about the big 2-5 story department stores that anchored the mall? mostly pop hits whatever was charting, whatever was "Safe"

Just background music throughout the malls.
