What would you say the quintessential/peak year of each console generation was? When all major consoles were popular and releasing big games? These would be my picks
st generation: 1975. Pong consoles flood the market this year, such as Atari's Home Pong, and Magnavox's Odyssey series. Last year before the release of the Fairchild Channel F, the first console to have games built into cartridges rather than the system.
nd generation: 1982. Massive flood of video game consoles such as the Colecovision and Atari 5200 happens this year. Last year before the video game industry crashes. Games like Pac-Man for the 2600 and Pitfall are released.
rd generation: 1988. Nintendo Entertainment System is huge and dominant, with the Master System a distant second place. Contra and Mega Man came out this year. Last year before the Sega Genesis and Game Boy were released.
th generation: 1993. The peak of the console wars. Sonic at the height of its popularity. Mortal Kombat released to consoles with the SNES version being censored. Star Fox shows what the SNES is capable of. Sonic CD arguably does the same for the Genesis.
th generation: 1998. Last year before the Dreamcast is released. An excellent year for gaming all around with titles like Ocarina of Time, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3, Pokemon Red and Blue, Spyro the Dragon, Banjo-Kazooie, and Metal Gear Solid. Game Boy Color is released.
th generation: 2004. Halo 2 and GTA San Andreas respectively were the peak of the Xbox and PS2 respectively. GameCube was also a major competitor especially with titles like The Thousand-Year Door. Although the DS was released this year, the GBA was still Nintendo's primary focus and you had games like Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen and Mario vs Donkey Kong.
th generation: 2009. The PS3 was rapidly increasing in popularity with the release of the Slim, and great titles like Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls. At the same time, the Wii was still very popular with titles like Wii Sports Resort and New Super Mario Bros Wii. The Xbox 360 of course was very popular as well with Halo 3 ODST and Modern Warfare 2. We got both the DSi and PSP Go this year as major handheld console revisions (though one was far more popular than the other).
th generation: 2017. Since the Switch is classified as a 7th gen console, this is pretty much the obvious choice. Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released on both the Wii U and Switch, bridging the two together. PS4 had excellent games like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Crash N Sane Trilogy. Xbox One X was released as well this year.
