We know damn well that SpongeBob started sucking after the movie. However, the show still aired on Nickelodeon and was milked by the network. This brings up an interesting question, when did the show peak in popularity? I have seen people bring up the show never took off until late 2001. But when was it absolutely EVERYWHERE? Here are some observations: In 2002, the show was very popular. I think this was the peak year in terms of quality too. So many great episodes like Chocolate With Nuts and Krusty Krab Training Video. This is also when SpongeBob starting having DVD releases, which were very popular throughout the 2000s (especially mid 2000s). 2003 was when Battle for Bikini Bottom came out. I played this game when I was a kid, and I loved it…and I still do. This game now has a diehard cult following, and is popular in the speedrunning community. 2004 was when the movie came out. It was a big deal. It’s unironically one of my favorite movies to this day. I’m not kidding. 2006 was when the forum SpongeBuddy Mania peaked in popularity, declining afterwards. 2007 was when Atlantis SquarePantis came out. This special was extremely popular in terms of ratings, becoming the most viewed SpongeBob episode of all time, and it still is. It was not as well-received online though. Had too much filler. So when during this timeline would you say the show was actually most popular, when EVERYBODY both IRL and online was obsessed with it. Also, when was merch for the show most prolific. It’s still everywhere of course, but as a 2000s kid, I remember it being inescapable at one point. There was even a SpongeBob TV set in the mid 2000s.
