Lol facts. Trump fundamentally changed the way we watch presidential debates. I thought the 2012 one was intresting at the time, but it was much more tame than what will see in the next 2 election cycles. The 2020 presidential debate was a shitshow Night one was pretty bad, but night 2 was much better and the vice president debate was actually good. It was still far more entertaining than anything pre-2016.

I remember all the memes around that election ("Mitt Romney Style!", Kony 2012) like it was yesterday. It was such a light-hearted election, and Romney was so humble about his loss. I strongly miss that era of politics.
It was in stark contrast with the total shit storms that were 2016 and 2020, not only because of Trump but the turmoil, the dank memes and the dividedness around it.

I feel like politics should be like that instead of being reactionary, straw manning, and polarizing.

So I was actually using ngram, and decided to look up politics. And you can actually see interest in politics declined in 2008 after the election, and then hit a low in 2011, before increasing afterwards before peaking in 2016 (when else?)

1996 election was even more boring and forgettable. Not surprising, given how everybody knew Bill Clinton would win, and, much like the early 2010s, the mid-late 90s was a very politically stable era.

Now that I think about it, I suppose one notable aspect of the 1996 election was that it was the first election that galvanised internet use with Windows 95 being well established by that point.

It only further goes to show how the 90s in general were much more tech-centric rather than politics-centric (except maybe the early 90s).
