The early 2010s was a very apolitical era, and the fact more people talked about the supposed end of the world in 2012 rather than the election is living proof of that.

The 2012 election was memorable not so much the election itself but the events surrounding it. During that time you had hurricane Sandy, serval mass shootings, and the possibility of having a Mormon president. 2012 election has been largely forgotten about thanks to the political turmoil we had in 2016 and 2020. Back when it was happening I remember seeing people my age (I was 16 at the time) being more invested into it.

I think much of that is that Mitt Romney is a very boring and vanilla politician, whereas Donald Trump was always a fountain of memes as soon as he announced his run for presidency.

I heard people talking about the election as early as mid 2012 when Obama announced he was going to legalize gay marriage. The 2012 election did have some interest in my circles but it didn't feel like our lives were at stake. The 2012 election is as forgettable as the 2004 election but it was your typical incumbent election where you know the sitting president is going to win.

That is also true. Funny you bring that up because I remember right after the 2012 election ended Trump annouced that he would run.

The 2004 election I would say was talked about more, since this was when anti-Bush backlash was big online, and many people wanted John Kerry to win. You also had Howard Dean with his famous "YEAH!"

Times have changed. He got cancelled for an enthusiastic cheer whereas the 2016 and 2020 debates were basically like a petty row you'd see on maury or the jerry springer show.

I never hear anyone bring up. I didn't hear any adult mention the details behind 2004 election until 2016. Granted I was only 8 at the time, but still I hear people discuss the 2000, 2008 and 2012 a lot more in recent years on social media and in real life.

Trump fundamentally changed the way we watch presidential debates. I thought the 2012 one was intresting at the time, but it was much more tame than what will see in the next 2 election cycles.
