To paraphrase various definitions of the word I have viewed from various websites, a subculture refers to a group of individuals who share similar behaviors, opinions, and interests that differentiate themselves from the mainstream culture. Key examples of this include Grunge, Emos, and Hipsters. These three subcultures are sometimes inaccurately referred to as "counter-cultures". The primary difference between subcultures and countercultures is a subculture simply tries to offer an alternative to the mainstream and can be aligned to a certain extent with the mainstream, whereas a counter-culture, like the Hippies of the '60s, actually go the full extent of boycotting and "counterring" the mainstream culture, hence the term "counter-culture". The Hippies of the '60s actually have much more in common with the Suffragettes of the early 20th Century than they do with either Grunge, Emo, or Hipster culture.
Now, the three subcultures I've brought up were iconic of each of the last three decades; Grunge of the '90s, Emo of the '00s, and Hipsters of the '10s. Now that we're well into the 2020s decade, the question is begged on what the primary subculture of this decade will be, and many people believe that the answer to that question is already here. E-boys and E-girls!
Except, E-boys and E-girls I don't think should be considered a subculture at all. They should instead be considered just a facet of the mainstream Tik Tok culture, in fact that's exactly what they are. E-boys and E-girls literally, not figuratively, do the same shit as other Tik Tok users do, all they do is make "amusing" or "flirtatious" videos on the platform just for a few clicks, just like all other Tik Tok users do. They don't have their own musical style and just listen to various styles within the mainstream, from Soundcloud rap, to indie pop, to the supposed "pop-punk revival", (the pop-punk revival is fake, but that's besides the point). Their clothing styles are simply throwbacks to old goth and grungy styles of previous decades, of which other Tik Tok users outside of this so called "subculture" are also using throwbacks in their videos as well. Not to mention they don't have their own style for furniture or décor like previous, real subcultures had.
If E-boys and E-girls are by any means a "subculture", than frankly, subculture is dead.

They don't seem like a era defining subculture unlike emo or hipster. I never hear about them besides references to tiktok.

Tik Tok E-Boy and E-Girl go together with the new version of Pop Punk ( it's not exclusive to the new pop punk but goes along with it)

It's entirely possible they might become a real subculture soon, but right now, I think they're just trendy Tik Tok kids. TBH, not every era needs a defining subculture. The late 90s/early 00s time frame didn't have much in the way of a subculture (unless you count nu metal), neither did the late 80s (goth was dying down, but grunge hadn't come in yet. It's also possible that COVID has prevented the rise of a real subculture, since everybody has been forced to stay at home and not experiment with dressing styles or other things like that.

Are eboy and egirls still a thing yes, anyone that says no does not go on tik tok Yeah, i guess it's still popular, but the novelty wore off. Although I don't think it's nearly as popular as emo in the 2000s/early 10s

Tik Tok is pop culture Yet the only place where e-boys/girls are mentioned are on tiktok. With emo it was everywhere in the mid 00s and with hipster it was everywhere in the 10s it wasn't only talked about in the context of tiktok. I haven't even heard of anyone talk about it at all after 2020.

this isn't being toxic, this is you saying one thing that is untrue and me showing you the facts to disprove you lol It's nowhere significant as emo or hipster, i'll say that much. And you can find people talking about pretty much anything at any given time but it isn't talked about that much like it used to be in 2019 and 2020. You can still find videos of people talking about hipsters on youtube in 2022.
