Why are people even considering Olivia Rodrigo. She's a nobody. She's not popular at all. She literally had two or three sleeper hits and people are thinking she's the next Elvis lol. It's ridiculous.

Billie Eilish and The Weeknd are tied for popularity but Billie Eilish sort of created 2020s pop. Before throwback pop became popular she came out with a style that was unique for the new decade. The Weeknd was much more successful because of Blinding Lights though.

It's ridiculous. She has by far the most streamed album of 2021 but she's not popular, big lol. Also, I don't think you understand what a sleeper hit means.

Remember when Ava Max was a thing? She's pretty much a one-hit wonder in her home country, the US, and that was in late 2018-early 2019. In Europe, she's a two-hits wonder instead. Not sure why you even bothered putting her in this. Anyway, I would have to go with TheWeeknd since he has easily the biggest song of the decade so far. The issue is that his newest album "Dawn FM" is interestingly nowhere near as successful as "After Hours". Biggest upcoming artist is easily Olivia Rodrigo. She went from relatively obscure Disney actress to pop superstar and radio darling with a devouted stan community in an impressive short amount of time. There's even already a documentary about her releasing soon. Honorable mentions go to Lil Nas X and Doja Cat, both for having a major pop crossover appeal and bringing the hip hop world into a refreshing direction. Ava Max was bigger in 2020/2021 than she was in 2018. She is definitely one of the most popular musicians in this era with popular hits like "Kings and Queens", "Everytime I cry" and "My head and my heart". This is her era, "Sweet but psycho" in 2019 was just a precursor.

The Weeknd was much more successful because of Blinding Lights though. Billie Eilish's popularity rapidly died down after 2020. Her style is nothing like the dominant style of the 20s it's more like the opposite, downbeat and where she whisper-sings compared to the upbeat retro pop that is most common. The Weeknd really brought us into the retro pop era of the early 20s.

In terms of sales, popularity and impact, I'm gonna have go with The Weeknd on this as well. Sure, he was already really popular with the House of Balloons/Thursday/Echoes of Silence trilogy in the early 10s, then had more success with his BBTM album and hit singles "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills" in the mid-10s. And he had Starboy as well.
But I think The Weeknd really became massive in 2020 with After Hours and his behemoth hit "Blinding Lights", especially during the pandemic. And he also headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in 2021.
But in terms of new mainstream artists in the 2020s, I would probably go with Olivia Rodrigo since she set multiple numerous Billboard and Spotify records for her debut album Sour, and is arguably a significant part of Gen Z culture, especially with her song "drivers license" taking over TikTok by storm.

She's just starting out on her solo music career and already has a sold-out tour. I'm not a huge fan of hers, but I'm not gonna exactly count her out in terms of falling off just yet.

"Good 4 U" is still charting as we speak right now despite coming almost a year ago. Having two hits per album cycles is extremely normal for the streaming era as singles now do not like they used to. For instance, Adele has the biggest selling album of 2021 and only managed to get one hit out of it. She didn't vanish, in fact she's getting some buzz again for her documentary on Disney+ and the Grammys are coming next where she's nominated for multiple awards.

Even still she can't be the second biggest artist of the early 20s with only two hits. Biggest artist of 2021 perhaps but in the other two years she has little to no presence on the charts.
