There hasn't really been one artist which completely reigns in this era but several who have been popular lately, unlike say the late 90s/early 00s with britney spears or the late 00s and early 10s with lady gaga. But out of all of them, which would you say is the most popular?
I would say The Weeknd. His popularity has been consistent in this era. He dropped the most iconic and biggest throwback hit in late 2019 which peaked in popularity in early 2020 and was named the number one single of 2020. Not to mention it kicked off the whole throwback era were still in now. A lot of his other songs have charted very high in this era and also the collab he did with Doja Cat. He also probably has the biggest hit so far in 2022 with "Sacrifice".

To do an artist that has been consistently popular throughout this era, I would so far say Olivia Rodrigo. Because a lot of these other artists were also popular in the 2010s (The Weeknd, Justin Bieber). I want somebody who's new to this era.

The Weeknd proved to be a 2020s artist. His peak was in 2020. I thought he would stay in the 2010s.

An honourable mention should go to Tate McGrae since she's big here in Canada. Her songs are always on the radio on repeat here.

She was only big last year with driving license in spring and good 4 u in the summer then vanished.

The Weeknd actually made pop music sound good in the early 2020s.

1. The Weeknd 2. Ariana Grande 3. Dua Lipa 4. Doja Cat 5. Lil Nas X 6. Olivia Rodrigo 7. Billie Ellish
The way Billie Eillish fell off.... She was definitely the biggest popstar in the world in 2019 - early 2020. But I don't think she cares about fame, cause she kept promotion snooze-fest songs that were obviously going to flop

It seems like she perfectly fit the bill to be the next britney or gaga in the 2020 vision era and then poof, she completely disappeared after therefore I am in 2020. Makes me wonder, maybe if COVID didn't happen she might have actually became a superstar. Like how the recession made everyone listen to electropop for escapism, COVID is making people listen to throwback hits for escapism. They wouldn't want to listen to depressing whisper pop during this crisis.

They wouldn't want to listen to depressing whisper pop during this crisis. Not really, I'd say she flopped because she promoted bad songs The first single from her new era should've been "Therefore i am" (it was the highest charting song from happier than ever, and it just sounds fresh and catchy) then she should've promoted Happier Than Ever (the single) and then some other pretentious sad girl song But she kept promoting songs that were OBVIOUSLY going to underperform, which diluted public interest in her new album, making her subsequent singles chart lower and lower. If I'm not mistaken, the last single from HTA completely missed the billboard top 10, which is a really bad sign considering we're in the TikTok era where any piece of dogshit song can debut at number 1

Remember when Ava Max was a thing? She's pretty much a one-hit wonder in her home country, the US, and that was in late 2018-early 2019. In Europe, she's a two-hits wonder instead. Not sure why you even bothered putting her in this.
Anyway, I would have to go with TheWeeknd since he has easily the biggest song of the decade so far. The issue is that his newest album "Dawn FM" is interestingly nowhere near as successful as "After Hours". Biggest upcoming artist is easily Olivia Rodrigo. She went from relatively obscure Disney actress to pop superstar and radio darling with a devouted stan community in an impressive short amount of time. There's even already a documentary about her releasing soon.
Honorable mentions go to Lil Nas X and Doja Cat, both for having a major pop crossover appeal and bringing the hip hop world into a refreshing direction.
