Mine are Hack n Slash games such as Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden. I used to be a 2D fighting games addict though back in the 10s and it's still one of my favourite genres. Arena shooters like the modern DOOM games are also one of my favourites.

Arena shooters used to be huge back in the mid 90s to early 00s. It started with Doom, and continued with the likes of Quake and Unreal Tournament. I'd actually say the early 2000s was the peak of arena shooters. It declined heavily during the mid-2000s however with the rise of titles like Halo and Counter-Strike. Of course, I think the mid-90s DOS era of FPSes (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D) is very different from the late 90s-early 00s era of Unreal and Quake. Both have their merits, I personally prefer the former era for single-player experiences, and the latter for multiplayer experiences.

It's a shame, they're so much better than the dull ass realism-based military or survival shooters nowadays. Although i'm glad there are a few signs of it making a comeback with games such as Shadow Warrior 3 which has come out lately and arguably Deathloop as well.

Ever since Call of Duty became popular, shooters became so same-ish. I also hate how they're filled with cutscenes and quicktime events and that they're so linear, and that they take themselves SO seriously. What I love about 90s shooters is the fact they are NOT based in reality, but instead are based in fictional worlds. And the fact they encourage you to explore around and find secrets. The only time 2010s shooters ever involve anything fictional is with the overused 2010s trend of zombies. The 7th generation of video games coincided with zombiemania and so there were A LOT of zombie video games in general.

The FPS genre is unhealthily oversaturated with realism and military based shooters. I legit just thought the entire first person shooter genre was dudebro garbage until I played DOOM 2016. Then I realised first person shooters used to be good but now they just suck because devs make them all realistic and boring nowadays.

God that’s what I hate the most about Call of Duty and shooters like it. It gave the genre a bad name and made many think that’s just how they were, when they didn’t start out all muted looking and filled with cutscenes. Wolfenstein 3D, the first popular FPS, is very colorful, encourages exploration, and is gameplay-focused with no cutscenes or even plot to speak of. It’s about as far from COD as you can get.

Lots of people hate on it, but that’s only because of how shitty it is nowadays. When it started out, it was amazing.

Definitely if we're talking about shooters like COD and battlefield which would be equivalent to mumble crap. I still think there are some great shooters that are coming out like the modern doom games, shadow warrior 3, deathloop and splitgate(halo with portals).

First person shooters (FPS) became a favorite, I also love MMORPGs though too!
