Electropop was still big, It was 99% 7th gen gaming(8th gen came out mid november and even then pretty much no one had it), arguably the last year where smartphones were considered a novelty, emo haircuts were still popular. flat/minimalistic design hadn't taken off, still felt optimistic and lively, pre gamergate, pre ISIS.
Late part you could argue is more mid 10s though. Lots of stuff happened in the last third of that year.

Emo haircuts were not popular in 2013, extreme false information nightmarefarm Smartphones were 100% not niche in 2013

I would say it's less of an emo style but more of a swoop style.
