Even the non-cheesy songs of 1997 had a very happy and optimistic tone to them, such as this song later featured in the SpongeBob movie

2000s: Lightest - 2000 Darkest - 2001(honourable mention to 2009) 2010s: Lightest - 2011 Darkest - 2017 2020s(pending): Lightest - 2022 Darkest - 2020 2009 culturally was very lighthearted and saccharine. That year was defined heavily by things like scene culture, Black Eyed Peas’ The End album, and Justin Bieber’s rise to fame. That shit is like, the OPPOSITE of edgy. I’d go as far as to call it the most lighthearted and wholesome year of the 2000s culturally. 2000 if anything was culturally very edgy and aggressive. Think Limp Bizkit and Attitude Era WWE. I’d say the edgiest year of the 2000s was 2005. 2007 had things like Club Penguin, Wii games, and High School Musical. 2005 didn’t have any of that shit whilst also still having a lot of emo culture and angsty rock songs. 2001 was also very edgy, but replace emo with nu metal. Those two years were the edgiest of the 2000s.

In a year defined heavily by Nyan Cat, Justin Bieber’s peak, and rage comics, I completely agree.

Super light hearted vibe with the peak of Backstreet boys, Nsync constantly on TRL and on tv commercials. Also I have to add the Attitude era started getting more lighthearted around 2000 when WCW made the announcement they were going to be sold soon. There was less R rated stuff than say a year like 1999 for WWF. I do agree 2009 was super lighthearted and wholesome year, despite the recession. I agree that 2005 felt super edgy, it was a faux edgy because of emo and pop punk
