I think it turned to shit in 2013. It's not like every aspect of the internet completely fell off overnight but that was when youtube started going to shit with google +, social media became fragmented everything started feeling corporate and memes started their decline. Flat design started taking off around then I think as well. Flash games and online RPG type games became less popular around then I think.

Yeah I was gonna say 2013 actually. There was some good stuff gaining popularity then alongside it, but once Facebook had gone full timeline and people stopped making such candid posts, the site got a lot less fun. The downside of that era was that toxicity was more out in the open, but it also felt a lot less censored than the years to follow. I imagine it coincides with people doing a lot more from smartphones at that time than actually sitting down and using a computer. As guilty as I am of being on my phone a lot, I will admit I think internet was less overbearing yet more focused in those days.

It began to decline between 2012 to 2016, but 2017 is when it completely turned terrible. Vine shut down, Filthy Frank left YouTube, and of course, Jake and Logan Paul started making videos.

Especially 2016, when cringe culture was at its height and you had YouTubers like Keemstar and LeafyIsHere. I don’t want to go back.
