Side note but I don’t see how 2008 was a substantial shift in humor. It was largely another Smosh/NigaHiga/The Office/YouTube Poop kind of year. The only real thing that really separates 2008 from previous years is that Fred blew up that year, and even then, he was making videos since 2006 and high-pitched annoying characters were popular for a couple years prior. I’d argue the humor of the late 2000s can be traced back to either 2005 or 2006, the former because YouTube came out, Smosh started making videos, The Office premiered, and Crazy Frog blew up, and the latter because YouTube Poops first became a thing, Angry Video Game Nerd started making YouTube videos, and viral videos really became a big thing. Even when you look at mainstream comedies, 2005 is when The 40-Year Old Virgin came out, which saw a shift from teen sex comedies like American Pie to more adult-oriented films like The Hangover. So overall I’d say 2006 is when there was a shift in humor to what I recognize as “early Web 2.0 humor”, which didn’t even really end until about 2010, when Spadinner YouTube Poops died off, YouTube videos in general became more professional, and trollface/rage comic memes became popular.

The shift for humor was around 2007 in my opinion with Superbad dropping, you could feel all of the previous 2000s comedy movies seeming super irrelevant at the time

I still stand by this btw. This and 2023 will be a bigger shift than 2020 and bring us to the real 20s zeitgeist.

I don't know if it will be bigger than 2020 since 2020 changed the world, but I too think either later this year or next year there are will be a shift. No way this era will last all through 2023.
