You mean Gen X Soft Club. Yep, that's what it is called. It was a counter-reaction against the dirty, gritty grunge aesthetics of the mid-90s, in favor of something much cleaner, quieter, minimalistic.

Grunge became a joke in 96, even The Simpsons made front of it, I remember that shift to Gen Z soft club ( even if that name is NOT fitting) lol happened pretty gradually

From what I see here late 90s/early 2000s minimalism was all about rounded edges, while mid/late 2010s minimalism was obv all about straight rectangles (look at Windows 8)

From what I see here late 90s/early 2000s minimalism was all about rounded edges, while mid/late 2010s minimalism was obv all about straight rectangles (look at Windows 8) Electronics and visual design in general became curvier over the course of the 90s as a counterreaction to the angular boxiness of the 80s (though certain things in the 90s, like computers, still looked quite boxy), and then really peaked in the late 90s and early 00s when curved electronics like the iMac G3 and Game Boy Advance came out. The mid 2010s by contrast are probably the boxiest era aesthetically since the 80s.

Cellphones underwent that aesthetic change too. Just contrast the Motorola MicroTac from 1989 to the Nokia 3310 from 2000.

I even refused to collect it years later.
