I actually feel completely differently about 2004 across the board vs 2003. 2004 was a VERY exciting and fun year. Amazing TV shows, movies, games. Outkast's Hey Ya and Britney Spears' Toxic helped define the year. The ABSOLUTE peak of the 6th gen (Xbox, PS2, GameCube, Game Boy Advance). It also kickstarted the mid 2000s, an era that, if anything, I thought was TOO short. I loved that whole Drake and Josh/GTA San Andreas/peak Windows XP/MP3 player/Avatar: The Last Airbender/Need for Speed vibe and when it died down by 2007/2008, what it was replaced by, whilst not bad, just wasn't the same to me. I wouldn't go as far as to say the late 2000s were soulless (unlike the late 2010s), but it felt blander. Motion control games, gritty shooters, Twilight, Michael Bay Transformers. It was also pretty lame for cartoons and kid culture, and the music sounded very processed to me, a sharp contrast from the edgy rock and rap I was used to. The only thing I was happy to see go was ringtone rap, and even I consider that more of a late 2000s thing than mid 2000s, and it didn't really go away until 2009...which was still a terrible year for music (two words: crunk core). I agree 2004 is prob the most exciting year of the 2000s, everything was coming together, music, fashion, TV movies.. EVERYTHING ! I agree the late 2000s were not souless but they def lacked soul lol they felt super watered down, but it was def better than the mid 2010s imo Even by 2007 you started getting that vibe. Look at things like Shrek the Third and Soulja Boy. The early 2010s were not soulless, they were just REALLY trashy, and not even in a cool kind of way like in the mid 2000s. Jersey Shore is the prime example of early 2010s trashiness. Annoying Orange is a prime example of how shitty early 2010s humor could be.

Oh def ! and by mid 2007 you could see some 2010s things starting to bloom, Facebook while no where near bigger than Myspace became MEGA popular ( look @ most peoples sign up dates and they all point to early/mid 07) it had super buzz, Also Netflix were aggressively airing ads on tv as well, as well as the Iphone announcement. But on the flip side core 2000s culture was feeling very stale and "how much longer can this pop culture go ? " shows like Sopranos and King of Queens were getting kicked off the air, Toonami was a joke at this time. Chris Benoit killed his family making Wrestling horrible and not fun to watch at all.

A lot of great shows were canceled in 2007/2008 too, + the shift to 7th gen gaming. It didn't really feel like the mid 2000s gradually died off so much that it suddenly stopped.

2006 did admittedly feel like 2004-2005, but that's not really a bad thing honestly. I was really into the culture of the time. To be fair you could tell some things were winding down, like how there weren't as many big PS2 games like 2004-2005. But I wanted it to last longer anyway. I guess the reason I think 2016 for example felt long-in-the-tooth was that I wasn't huge into the culture of the mid 2010s and wanted to move into a new era, but little did I know how much worse it would be.

Two which I commonly mention being the meme explosion and the 2016 election/Trump. Also because of other things like late 10s style music starting with justin biebers "sorry", streaming becoming very popular, lots of youtube drama(leafy, pyro, keemstar) and pokemon go. Although i'm aware the latter two didn't stick, they still felt part of the transition at the time and i didn't know that they would be gone next year.

(TO YOU) What do you say? This is personal only. Ringtone rap era felt very long in the tooth by 2008 with all the shitty ringtone rappers and horrible eyesore fashion. I remember thinking it looked corny back then and i was just a kid The electropop 08 era was feeling SUPER long in the tooth by 2012. And i think the world agrees with me because of how quickly the electropop 08 era died in 2013. There were just so many Gaga rip-offs at the time. Ms.Gaga herself has extremely overexposed at the time (specially 2011) and had become something of a joke. Mumble era rap felt so long in the tooth by early 2019, though it peaked in popularity sometime in 2018 it was still super popular in early ’19. Speaking of the late 10s, the culture of the time already felt overwhelming and played out by early 2018 to me. I feel like at the time in that era it felt like every week there was a "new Gaga" everyone was trying to copy her avant garde look and electropop sound lol RedOne even helped produce some of the copy cats which is funny lol The imitators were never quite up to snuff and ended up looking like carbon copy imitations. I am almost positive Katy Perry got word of Born This Way early and rushed to make her on similar lyrical themed empowerment song "fireworks"

And yet it's crazy how gaga just completely fell off the map after 2013, makes me wonder why the same didn't happen to Britney post y2k

You made this thread twice. Anyways let me give my own answers, speaking from my own personal experience 2003: The early 2000s culture that was fresh in 2000/2001 gradually began to dry up and by 2003 really felt stale. Matrix sequels, late 90s cartoons still airing, Jim Carrey still in movies, nu metal still on the radio. 2011: Transformers and Twilight were still out there making movies, we still had electropop, companies were still pushing 3D, Frutiger Aero aesthetics were still trucking along. The present: Yes, right now. I’m still hearing constantly about Fortnite, woke politics, Donald Trump, streaming services, and other crap I’ve been hearing about since 2018. This is very much true, Early 2003 was dope, BUTTTTT we are tending to overlook how stale it felt. I skipped doing 2003 atmosphere threads for this very reason. Back in 9th grade for the 02-03 freshman year, I felt like the early 2000s were on auto pilot, the early 2000s did everything they could do pop culturally, there was no where else to go. Wrestling was starting to feel super stale in 03, The WB..you could tell was running the wheels in the sand. MTV 2 was starting to air more reality shows and less music. You could tell things were just "there" The Fake mid 2000s was a LONG SLOW and drawn out process, growing pains ensued until Fall 2004. Things felt super uneasy and unbalanced pop culture wise until we hit that Fall 2004 marker. It was like a Mario flag end of level checkmark...we needed to hit that threshold of Summer 2004 to fully cross over. But yeah early 03 felt LONG in the TOOTH ! lol Yeah, very early 2003 was till somewhat good/okay but the not as good as the other parts of the early 2000s,i'm thinking we need to do a breakdown thread of the pros and cons of start/early 2003 at some point, don't think it was done compared to other parts of the year.
