So 2003 was a rather long in the tooth year, here are the pros and cons of the first part of it. Mainly stretching from January 2003 to April 2003.
PROS
- 6th generation Video games have yet to peak and look awesome - Music Videos still have a early 2000s cinematic look - MTV 2 still playing music videos - The WB network still water cooler talk with shows like Dawson's Creek and their Kids WB! block - The rise of 50 Cent - Malcolm in the Middle still in it's prime - Slow rise of Adult Swim's popularity & the rise of Family Guy in general - That 70's Show still in it's prime - The Gameboy Advance SP slim redesign - The Economy is back to action - The Nokia phone with Snake starts to become SUPER popular and Texting is becoming "trendy" - Windows XP is now the standard OS - DVD still feels fresh and exciting
CONS
- Iraq war starts - FX Network sucked at this time - Wrestling feels very long in the tooth and loses a ton of popularity - Vh1 feels super boring and had not re branded yet - Too many Rom coms out ( Ashton Kutcher being the biggest offender) - Fox Box was not a suitable replacement for Fox Kids - Really bad movies came out during this stretch - Jordan retires again - We are still on Dial up Internet - Mac OS X sucks at this time and has a low market share

I do like Early 2003, but it did left a wired taste in my mouth a little bit. Mid-Late 2003 is miles better imo.

What I will say about early 2003 is that besides certain things like 50 Cent blowing up in popularity, this was really the last era, both literally and culturally to truly feel early 2000s, before we entered the weird early/mid 2000s transition period of mid 2003-early 2004. You're not wrong about there being some bad movies. I immediately think of Kangaroo Jack and its stupid-ass false advertising.

It doesn't have a strong wow factor. Too add a few: Pros: -Jackass show and social fad of imitating it was in its prime -Gamecube, PS2, Xbox in their prime and still have that new energy to them. -Skateboarding is still quite big and is still in its 2000s mainstream peak -Tons of pop culture has a 2002 feel or quality to it -More people have phones making it easier to communicate -You can easily find tons of movies on VHS for cheap, making it easy to stock up on movies quicky -Everyday fashion, to a good degree at least not entirely, feels a bit simpler and less flashy and brand focused as later -Rock music in the mainstream felt directly connected to 02 and almost like a short expansion of it, it also had a healthy balance of good hits from numerous subgenres (garage rock revival, post grunge, alt metal etc) compared to earlier times when it was more narrow and sometimes more consistently manufactured, which felt refreshing. There was better representation and more diversification of rock music across 02-03 Cons: - Rising patriotism and blind support for the iraq war and bush is a disappointing thing to witness - Optimistic energy from 2002 is starting to change and doesn't feel the exact same - Lots of movies feel super average or mediocre; daredevil sets the template for average and forgettable super hero movie, tons of unwatchable and shallow rom coms and bland horror and action movie sequels fill the theatres. - Ipods out for the third year but are expensive and there was no itunes for windows until late 03 or early 04, also itunes has a limited range of music - Lots of repetitive and corny hip hop hits gets overplayed quite a lot, although 2002 wasn't that different ex. Sean paul - No real iconic or mind-blowing collectable fads or trends, although you can say this about many years or divisions of years tbh. - Launch of the TMNT reboot in February 2003, animation style is characteristic of dark and more updated animation style that is representative of a trend that becomes more common, however this style bit artificial and exaggerated imo, was disappointed as a tmnt fan. - Subtle and vague incoming hints across music, fashion, movies and general atmosphere that contribute to a safe and kind of average vibe that becomes more apparent in fake mid 2000s and to some extent in mid 2000s, as discussed earlier.

This was when DVD and VHS were both popular formats, so you had more than one option when it came to buying and renting movies, which was something I liked. We kinda had something similar during the Blu-Ray era where DVDs became super cheap in contrast to the more expensive Blu-Ray format. The patriotism of 2003 I think is honestly applicable to the entire early 2000s post-9/11. This is one of the big reasons I prefer the mid 2000s since people were more critical of Bush by then. Early 2003 was when 50 Cent blew up. I'm giving 2003 some points for that, since 50 Cent was popular, but not overexposed like he was in 2005. Nu metal was still popular, and emo wasn't a thing yet. Pop punk was still in its happy goofy phase. 2003 is honestly one of the weaker 2000s years for movies honestly. The Matrix sequels were disappointing, Terminator 3 was a disappointment compared to the first two, and a lot of other movies were just lame uninspired sequels. There were some REALLY bad cheesy movies from 2003 too, like Kangaroo Jack, Cat In The Hat, and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Luckily, 2004 was a big improvement. Most people in early 2003 were still playing 2002 games. One notable game that came out in early 2003 was The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. It was criticized at the time for its artstyle, but in retrospect, is definitely one of the most unique Zelda games, and has that distinctive GameCube feel.

The corny Limp Bizkit/Kid Rock kind of nu metal was dead by this point though, as Limp Bizkit's Results May Vary album flopped HARD. And thank god.

I have some pretty crazy videos I recorded with friends from that time and prior, really really wild stuff most of us were skaters and were doing it even before jackass got big, you name it lol. The tapes are rotting in someone's basement. I feel like tracking them now, there's probably shit tons of embarrassing stuff though.
