Aside from the games, you ever notice how that year is never put in any top 5 lists ? There is a reason why lol

It does get ranked highly when talking about gaming. But not when talking about music or movies. It also doesn’t get talked about as much as the two surrounding years (1997 and 1999). I don’t know anyone who downright hates 1998. You and slashpop are literally the only people who talk shit about it. I also think 1990 is way worse.

Had it not been for Abc's TGIF block with Boy Meets World staying until 2000, 98 prob would have felt like another world. Tv wise lol

If it wasn't for buffy the vampire slayer, south park, the tom green show, mystery science theatre 3000 and a few classic shows coming to a close I would have given up on tv lol. On the other hand, it was a decent year for watching reruns and taping classic older shows/cartoons if you wanted to binge watch stuff like older simpsons and seinfield and so on. Although not unique to this year, kinda miss when you could rely on cable airing all episodes/seasons you wanted to watch in reasonable amount time without really thinking about finding them on the internet or renting/buying the series boxsets. 1998 def did felt slow and a bit empty, especially some points more than others, its almost like sometimes you had to pretend or go along with liking things just to cope with it in way lol. Personally, I prefer winter 97-98 and winter 98-99 portions of the year, if I had to choose a preferred period.

Yeah it felt like a waiting period, esp with Dreamcast import ads in the magazines "COMING SOON TO AMERICA" I was like wtf is a Dreamcast? and when is USA getting it ? Also Pokemon while buzzing in late 98..POPPPED off when it moved to The WB network with new episodes in early 99, 98 felt like one big holding period for 99 to come. I remember seeing Britney Spears Baby One more time video behind the scenes on the BOX in Aug 98, months before it was released, so I was left there waiting like... when is this Britney singer coming to the states officially ? Just lots of coming soon and wait vibes. Also pretty sure she did one of these shows near my mall in mid 98 ( edit it was June 1998)

The second half of 98 especially kinda felt like long transition and preview of 1999. I remember more pokemon coverage in magazines in mid 1998 and previews of dreamcast seemed unreal, it was hard to grasp the such a system being possible, you just wanted to know more. I remember searching for the magazines with most photos and coverage especially with previews and things I wanted to know in general, it's like you really had to look through all the magazines at local bookstore to find the one worth the money with best content it just wasn't realistic to get everything.
