It seems that 2001 and 2008 are the 2 main important years of the 2000s decade. Both were great years for pop culture, but were a hot mess express when it came down to the world events. Which year do you rock with the most? 2001? or 2008?

2001 after July 2001, was entering 8th grade in Fall 2001 and it was a blast, that whole school year. The only negatives of it are the obv 9/11 attacks, Anthrax scares and islamphobia. The first half of 2001 SUCKED and it was slow, but like I said by the Fall things were kicking into high gear.
Things I liked about 2001 ( post July)
- Xbox /Gamecube Launch - Debuts of Michelle Branch and Shakira - Pop Punk explodes in it's second phase with acts like Jimmy Eat World - launch of MTV 2 on all major cable and satellite systems ( yes this was a big deal) - Jordan returns to the NBA, this was a big deal because he had been out since 1998 - GTA 3 and the hype that surrounded it - Teen Pop finally dead - The new direction in music esp the Neptunes production - DVD mania was still fresh - Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter changing the game - Interesting games like Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2 and HALO ! - VANILLA SKY ugh amazing movie - Fast & The Furious mania ( everyone trying to be a drag racer lol)

I chose 2008. While I love 2001 (from a pop culture standpoint), I just love the adventure type energy that 2008 had. I got another question, which song do you prefer? One is from 2001, while the other is from 2008. Same title songs. 2001

2008.
I'm bias though because 2008 was one of the best years of my childhood and it's hard for me not to see it through rose-tinted glasses as a result.
I've only got vague memories of 2001, but I definitely would have loved to have experienced it at an older age. 9/11 will always be something of a 'sore point' though when it comes to 2001. Like, it's hard to judge the year without thinking about 9/11 and the tragedy of that day.

I think late 2001 had better pop culture despite the social environment. Also, there were lots of good movies and underground/less commercial music throughout the year but I remember earlier part of 01 was a bit too cookie cutter and late part was a bit too conservative. Despite the recession in 2008 the concept of obama being an option and then winning the presidency felt like step in the direction at the time, more progressive talks and views on topics started to increase even if there was a lot of conservatism around. Tech felt better balanced and geek and alternative subcultures were a lot more diversified and accepted in the mainstream 2008, compared to 2001. I'll go with 2008.

There is something about Q4 of 2001 that felt like a drug or something, like I was consuming some sort of drug while consuming the culture it was weird.

Unrelated but weed, although popular for ages, became very mainstream and was referenced more often in popular culture around that time, Afro man aside. There was a bit less taboo around it, and merch was massive. I remember seeing a more old school version shirt in 01 multiple times. Do you remember it as well? More ideas for new threads.
