Is it because of the pandemic? I remember when I first heard this song around late 2019/early 2020, I didn't think it would be such a big hit. I thought it would be one of those songs that may be popular for a few weeks then just drop from the charts.
I was VERY wrong since this song broke records on the Billboard hot 100. It has been on the Billboard charts for two years straight. It was the number 1 song of 2020. It was also in the top 10 for 2021 as well. This song was extremely popular and broke countless records. My question is why? Why was this song so popular? I like it. But I wonder why it became so big. Was it because of COVID?

In fact it was so big it is now considered the biggest Billboard hit of all-time, a spot that was previously taken by "The Twist", a song from 1960.
As for the question on why it was so big, it's hard to say exactly. But I think it's a rare pop song with a wide universal appeal, with TheWeeknd having enough R&B cred to appeal to the urban crowd, the song being cheery enough to appeal to the pop fans and the synths being nostalgic enough to appeal to older people. So it has the benefit of having a very large audience supporting it.
It should be noted though that people are now seemingly tired of his overexposure since his new album that came out this year had nowhere near the same impact as After Hours despite being in a similar style.

it's an 80s throwback so it's inoffensive amd familiar enough that old and young people alike can listen to
Sidenote: the weeknd is a hack and a fake

No idea. It's a good song but it's nowhere near as good as the weeknds other songs like Starboy and Take My Breath.

I always love when it comes on the radio and I'm driving on the freeway. Imagine if you got transported back to the '80s and you were cruising with that song. You would be the coolest person ever.

True but idk it seems like a gateway retro pop song. Starboy is his magnum opus imo. It sounded retro but futuristic at the same time and the melody and lyrics are very catchy and fun, blinding lights feels almost exactly like an 80s song besides the more clear production quality.

Idk, some songs just get big for no reason
Like, i get why songs like "Gangnam Style" or "Shape Of You" were big, but then there are songs like "Despacito" and Blinding lights... That get big for no reason
