What are your favorite game consoles of all time? Here are my picks
#5. Xbox. If you couldn’t already tell, the 6th and 7th Gen are my favorite console generations. The original Xbox was the first successful American console since the video game crash. And it’s not hard to see why. Whilst the console initially shipped with an infamously bulky controller (the “Duke”), and no Xbox Live, it did ship with Halo, which revolutionized the FPS genre. The console was advanced on so many levels as far as being the most graphically powerful machine out there, coupled with its usage of a hard drive, the first console to do so, in contrast to the memory cards that were the norm at the time. This console just has such a badass aesthetic, unlike even the Xbox 360 (although the Blades dashboard was pretty awesome), and any other console on the market. It felt like a console from another planet. It was dark and futuristic. The Apollo sounds that ply in the background of the dashboard certainly help. But it was the release of Xbox Live that really pushed this system to the next level. This system made online gaming popular, particularly with the release of Halo 2. But even outside of Halo, titles like Knights of the Old Republic and Fable are fantastic as well.
#4. PlayStation Portable. Due in part to my love of the PS2, and the fact the DS had a plethora of gimmicky games and shovelware, it’s the PSP that is my personal favorite handheld console. Whilst the Xbox 360 was the first home console that felt more than a game console, the PSP already had these innovations AS A PORTABLE CONSOLE. It could play MP3s, it could watch movies (the GBA could do it before, but MAN the PSP’s UMDs were so much better), it could browse the internet, it could connect to Wi-Fi. But none of that matters if the games aren’t good, and holy shit are they fantastic. GTA Liberty City Stories blew my fucking mind back then, and it’s still possibly my favorite handheld video game of all time. God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Ratchet and Clank, all franchises I loved, all got games on the PSP. The PSP had a thriving homebrew scene, making emulators and games for it, which just made me love it all that much more.
#3. Xbox 360. This system in my opinion really felt like the first game console that was far more than just a game console. It had achievements, you could buy games from it, you could browse the internet on it, you could watch videos on it. So much shit we take for granted today, the Xbox 360 did first, including support for HD. The games themselves were, much like the console, also quite revolutionary. Halo 3, BioShock, Mass Effect, Call of Duty, Gears of War. The only drawbacks were the Red Ring of Death in early models of the system, and they did force the Kinect on people later on, but the system was such a huge leap on so many levels, it deserves its high ranking.
#2. GameCube. This is my favorite Nintendo console, by far. I love everything about it. The design is so unique, and even the way it takes mini DVDs is unique and cool to me. The cube with the handle is a design I just love. Purple is the default color, but it also came in orange, black, and other colors. The console is also durable as fuck. They tested it on X-Play, and it survived things the Xbox and PS2 couldn’t. The controller is legendary. It’s simultaneously quirky and unique whilst also being incredibly comfortable, and with all the buttons in the right places. HUGE improvement over the N64 controller. And lastly, the games. Smash Melee, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Super Mario Sunshine, The Thousand-Year Door, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. So many fantastic games.
#1. PlayStation 2. I know, this is such a cliche choice, but there’s really no denying it. This is the best-selling system of all time to this day, and so it’s no surprise that this console has a huge library. This console has so many icons, from the 3D GTA games, to Devil May Cry, to God of War, to Ratchet and Clank, to Sly Cooper, and so much more. Even multi-platform games just feel right on the PS2, perhaps because it was my childhood system. The sheer variety of games is what really elevates it for me. Couple that with the fact it can play DVDs, and you have a masterpiece of a system.
