I knew about this trend of emotional rap songs of the mid 90s like “mama” from Tupac in that his expressing his inner sadness but it’s not like in the way emo rap is like lucid dreams or SAD!! by XXXtentacion tbh. Maybe it’s just the difference in artistic music video design. I think because in the late 2010s, emo rap was a fad with tons of edgy teens posting sad boi Bart Simpson memes and shit. Whereas in the mid 90s, there was never a movement of sad rap songs. It was just part of the zeitgeist of the time. In my honest opinion, I find the mid 90s stuff far more authentic than the late 10s stuff. It just seems like emo rap was this thing edgy 15 year olds on Instagram caught on to and posted stories about how sad they were whilst Lil Peep or XXXTentacion played in the background. Plus the mid 90s stuff still kept true to gangsta rap themes. It was just more serious than anything. Idk I mean if the Emo rap songs were coming from a place of pain as much as the most emotional hip hop songs of the mid 90s then I don’t see why they’re not as authentic. They were both just part of each decades zeitgeist since it belongs to each of they’re respective decades.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that deep introspective rap songs aren't REALLY a new thing. It's just that we've gone so long without them, that we ASSUME it's a new thing. I think what's really allowed emo rap as a movement to take off is the fact that rock isn't popular anymore, so like, in the 90s, when somebody wanted angsty music, they went to grunge, when somebody wanted angsty music in the 00s, they went to emo or nu metal, but in the 2010s, with rock having no relevance in the mainstream anymore, people are turning to emo rap.
