Just look at how different hit songs from 2005 and 2006 were by comparing these Billboard Year End charts.. 2006 truly was a shift.

Not really. Emo and glam rap were big in both years. Does not seem that different to me.

The mainstream music in the western world during those years wasn’t entirely different. I do think some people are over exaggerating at how 2006 was SOOO different from 2005. 2006 was not that different from the year before it.

2006 was not that different from 2005 musicwise but I will say this
When Timbaland's productions started taking over in Q4 things changed a tiny bit ( a tiny bit)

There def was a shift in 2006 with Facebook gaining steam, Blackberry Pearl,Disney Channel rebrand, The Cw,Ps3/wii etc etc but as far as music the shift was small, even tho Timbaland sounding songs started taking over in Q4

2006 was slightly more pop-focused than 2005, but not by much and it was basically going back to 2004 level.

There might’ve been a small shift in pop music, but rock and rap were almost identical between the two years. FFS, Gorillaz had a hit in both years, a feat they only accomplished in the mid 00s.

My opinion is of the majority...not much difference in music that is worth talking about. On a somewhat unrelated note, for me, it's like looking and listening through the last for all the various years that 'DJ Sid Mashups' (whose two videos slim95 pasted here) and checking out the few comments made about what the landscape was like in a given year and what music trends/fads were introduced, in the mainstream, in the process of dying out, so on and so forth.

I'm quite shocked "Mr. Brightside" took until 2005 to peak in the US. It was released way back in 2003!
