In comparison to 2002 and 2001 ( late half) like it was sandwiched in between
and had a very hard time of standing out in comparison to the other years

I would say 2003 was better than 2004. Though 2003 is still very much a mid 2000s year. Music felt more fresh and exciting in 2003 with new artists people haven't heard of before coming out like 50 Cent and Disney actors like Hilary Duff breaking into the music industry.
