1992 to 1997 3D video games were completely nonexistent on game consoles at this time, and whilst there were 3D games at arcades, they were primitive-looking untextured games. Virtua Racing is the quintessential example. Gaming was dominated by the 16-bit era, with even NES games still having some relevance. By 1997, 3D was the norm, and with few exceptions, sprite-based games in general were irrelevant.
1996 to 2001, as nightmarefarm mentioned, would probably be 2nd.

The fact FF7 wasn't out yet only further adds to your point honestly. The biggest JRPG of 1996? SUPER MARIO RPG.Yeah, 1996 to 2001 was definitely a MASSIVE leap from that point of view. For other genre comparisons, compare Super Mario 64, released in 1996, with Jak and Daxter, released in 2001. Or compare Quake with Halo. Or Resident Evil with Silent Hill 2.
