What are years that you are unsure if they should really be classified shift years or not? Or years that are almost shift years.
For me:
- 2006. I don't recall a shift. The arguments people give with the "late 2006 shift" meme aren't very compelling like for example the last pre-iphone year(as if everyone instantly brought iphones when it came out in 2007) or the PS3 and WII releasing when pretty much no one had them in late 2006.
- 2011. Smartphones become mainstream, Osama Bin Laden dies, Occupy Wall Street, Windows 7 takeover, Google Chrome takeover, etc.
- 2013. Overhyped, mid 2010s vibes were already strong in late 2012 and early 2013. 8th gen consoles came out but pretty much no one had them. Maybe it is a shift but it still feels really overhyped.
- 2015. Last innocent and simpler 2010s year for the most part. The late part of the year had political tensions and this year was a transitional stage for meme culture as well. We had simpler wacky memes like John Cena earlier in the year and Hotline Bling memes late in the year(mind you, this meme format was spammed endlessly from 2016-2018). Music felt different at the end of the year. Also last year where people played on 7th gen and it still had games made for it even if it was crawling to the grave.
- 2021. Shift out of COVID and new president.
I'm aware these are unpopular opinions. I don't mind elaborating further.
Also if you disagree with takes in this thread, be civil about it and give an actual rationale on why you disagree.

This is revisionism but i think 2017 was pretty innocent I mentioned they were unpopular opinions. I don't see 2017 as innocent. That was probably the least innocent year of the 2010s if anything. Poltiical tensions were very high because trump got elected, london bombings, nazi rallies etc. Early 2017 still had remnants of the edgelord youtube era from 2016, late 2017 had mumble rap.

Like how kids born in like 2002 would think 2012-2014 is the last innocent times before their teens start. But otherwise I just don't see it that way at all when it is arguably the darkest 2010s year. The only other year which contends is 2018.

Also if you disagree with takes in this thread, be civil about it and give an actual rationale on why you disagree. Things that shifted in 2006- The WB network & UPN network ends and The CW is formed - Scene fashion gets very popular, has a buzz - That 70's Show and Malcolm in The Middle end ( cornerstones of The 2000s) - Playstation 3 and Nintendo wii launch - Windows Vista beta launches ( majority of XP machines in stores are replaced) - WWE Raw changes their theme and logo - Hipster gets more of a presence - American Apparel starts advertising heavily - Blackberry pearl debuts and is a hit ( first smart phone) - Facebook opens up to the public without an email - Twitter is launched ( would not be a hit til several years later) - Best buy announces it will stop selling CRT TV's in Q1 and Q2 of 2007 - Disney Channel rebrands their whole network with shows like Hannah Montana
it's understandably you didn't think of these shifts because you told us you don't remember 2006 well

Many late millennials see 2001, the year of 9/11, as an innocent year, because their childhood ran through it, but it would’ve been UNTHINKABLE when we were actually living through it.

Both 2014 and 2015 were the years of MLG and Vine memes. The only noticeable change, to me at least, was that due to Donald Trump running for president, there were more political memes in the year, though nowhere near the extent of 2016.

I think 2014 was. Filthy Frank blew up that year, and MLG memes are related to dank memes. Hell, even 2013 had some early dank memes.
