Which one is it closer to overall?
Hard Mode: Don't say "either" or "both".
Imo the mid 2010s(Late 2013-Late 2015) are overall closer to the Early 10s besides very late 2015 and 2016 which leans more towards the late 10s. The dark vibe, trump, general political division and modern meme culture make the late 10s feel very different than the mid 10s.

As a whole, I'm leaning towards the late 2010s. Because this is where memes became edgy and pop culture/internet culture became heavily politicized.

I only noticed mainstream memes getting edgy from late 2015 onwards. In early-mid 2015 you had stuff like the "John Cena" and "Shia LeBeouf" memes. MLG was the only mainstream recurring edgy meme before then afaik. Same applies to political correctness, I only noticed it starting mid-late 2015 then really coming at full force in 2016.

It was late 2015 and 2016 when filthy frank was talked about the most.

You don't think Gamergate/Ferguson was a sign of society becoming more PC and divided? Because most people put that as the turning point.

I was watching youtubers at the time who was pushing gamergate. Like I said before that was merely the spark. The flame began shortly after trump announced his run and that he would erect a wall.

A lot of the Gamergaters in 2014 were the same people who became the anti-SJWs later. Gamergate also sparked the whole general "anti-feminism" movement in general, which was big in the mid 2010s (up until about 2017).

It just hadn't properly exploded into a flame yet. Sort of how the release of the Iphone in 2007 may have been a spark of 2010s culture but obviously 2007 felt nothing like the 2010s. It wasn't until 2011-2012 where it evolved into a flame and iphones are everywhere.

Whereas Gamergate was something many people on the internet were talking about, and it was this very event that led to internet and gaming culture becoming more politicized. It became cool to hate on feminism after Gamergate which only grew more and more over time (peaking in 2016). Even if Trump was what really caused the internet to become more political, I mean, it's not like the gap between Gamergate and Trump is that big. It's pretty clear Gamergate was the root of the divisiveness that defined toxic mid-late 2010s internet culture.

Smartphones were very common in 07 08 and even 09, Blackberry Pearl was even spoofed on the Seinfeld Reunion in 09, Steve Jobs talked about the smartphone called Blackberry pearl being popular in his Iphone keynote in Jan 07. Now granted smartphones did not explode until 2010/2011 but they were more popular than u think prior

The mid 10s and late 10s were relatively similar.

the mid 10s are more like the late 10s
- sjw culture and alt right culture were prominent in 2015 and 2016 and continued in the late 10s. 2014 also had some sjw culture but it was in the early stages
- trump was a prominent figure in 2015 and 2016 and would become president in the late 10s
- 8th gen gaming popular in both mid and late 10s
- smartphones are flatter, taller, and wider in both the mid and late 10s. in the early 2010s phones were smaller, bulky, and rectangular. also airpods existed in both the mid and late 10s
- the BLM movement and protests were prominent from 2014-2020
- trap music, although already a thing in the early 10s, started to gain more popularity the mid 10s with songs like “trap queen”, “panda”, and “lifestyle”, and the genre peaked in 2016-18
- mumble rap became more prominent in the mid 10s and would continue into the late 10s
- artist that came out in the mid 10s like Travis Scott, Post Malone, Migos, and Ariana Grande would go on to peak in the late 10s
