There's been a trend brewing in the early 2020's of referring to teenagers as "literal" children, especially among teens and young adults themselves. This goes beyond 13 and 14yos who could possibly be prepubescent and are considered minors in all aspects of the law, now extending to 16 and 17yos. While these are still technically minor ages, they are being discussed as if they are comparable to much younger children. We are also seeing an emphasis on 18 and 19yos still being in their teens, despite their legal adult status, which is accompanying an increase in the ages required to buy items such as weapons and cigarettes. Meanwhile those who interact with teenagers, now including late teens who are out of high school, are being increasingly referred to as "groomers" regardless of whether there is evidence of grooming occurring or without even being significantly older. (Late teens interacting with slightly younger teens are not exempt from this outcry.)
Personally I believe this is both a product of infantilization and hypervigilance. As we decrease our societal tolerance of young people being taken advantage of, the response is moving in a direction that feels overbearing and possibly detrimental.
Have you noticed this and what are your thoughts? Post examples if you can.

This has always been a thing which had existed before the 21st century as well. It's a common occurance for adults to call teenagers kids, some even calling people up to 25 years of age a "kid". Youth is relative, to people over like 60 people in their 20s maybe 30s are considered kids to them for example.

The type of thing I am talking about:
Criticism for: -17yos dating 19yos -19yos dating people in their 20's -Juniors and seniors in high school having friends who are in college -High schoolers having work relations at their part-time job -Being a slightly older college student
Responses: -High schoolers emphasized as being children as though they are the same as elementary schoolers -16yos posting in their social media bios that those 18+ should not follow them -Otherwise young people being asked to leave spaces for comfort reasons
It is not about being youthful as much as the implication that teens and young adults have a lower intellectual capacity than they really do. It is also unfair comparison to prepubescent children who deserve the distinction of truly being in biological childhood.

It is also unfair comparison to prepubescent children who deserve the distinction of truly being in biological childhood. It's just a matter of what the law says. If you mean engaging in sexual activities, then depending where you are you are not allowed to do that regardless of being one year apart. If the age of consent is 16, then it would be illegal and wrong for someone who is 16 to be with someone who is 15. If the age of consent is 18, then it would be illegal and wrong for someone who is 17 to be with someone who is 18. Pornography laws are always 18 and over, so that's why it is more socially acceptable for the age to be 18, even if the age of consent is 16, because of those laws and because they are a legal adult. I agree with you about 18 and 19 year olds dating 20+ year olds though, there is nothing wrong with that. It is perfectly legal and socially acceptable. Those who think it's weird are weird themselves.

It may be rooted in it or responding to some of those issues, but it has gone beyond that.

Like, how different developmentally are 17 and 18 year olds really? They may be more mature than 12 and 13 year olds, but they still have that teenage recklessness to them. The age of majority, set in 18 in much of the Western World, is an arbitrary line that doesn't matter as much as people think it does. You're not suddenly more mature just because you can smoke, have sex, and vote.
