We are almost nearing the end of this era.
What are the major things that defined the Early 2020s?
My list:
- Absolute shitshow politics. Boris Johnson just resigned as PM after constant scandals being revealed by him or someone in his administration like every month or so. This is the mad lad that put everyone in lockdown whilst attending over a dozen parties in one year. And then getting busted for it and saying he "didn't know he was at a party". Biden has also proven to be very incompetent and makes gaffes constantly and most likely has dementia. Also there is even more political division than the late 10s, we had those huge BLM riots 2 years ago and the whole masker vs anti masker, vaxxer vs anti vaxxer situation. In general this has been a very chaotic, messy and turbulent era for politics.
- COVID. At least for 2020 and 2021.
- Nostalgia. I've mentioned before this is the era of nostalgia. We are all nostalgic for yesteryear and it shows when pop culture is completely dominated by nostalgia. Most of the music I hear in public are songs from the 00s or 10s.
- Empty pop culture. This links with the previous point but it feels empty because of a lack of strong monoculture and that everyone is consuming culture of previous decades more. It feels like ever since 2020 pop culture shifted to the side rather than being all in your face like it was during the 10s and previous decades. And this links with the previous point but also even the actual pop culture just feels completely unoriginal and rehashes previous decades which contributes to the emptiness feeling.
- TikTok
- An overall sense of bleakness and pessimism

Politics have been a shitshow honestly since 2015 Politics is now a shitshow on steroids. You have a clown in the white house and a clown as prime minister of britain simultaneously in this decade, it's honestly ridiculous. The late 10s was more of a precursor to this situation, it just doesn't compare. Besides the 2016-2017 school year politics were somewhat stable at least. Here you have a prime minister putting everyone in lockdown whilst he was going to dozens of parties. Then getting exposed for it a year later. And that's only the tip of the iceberg. It's like something out of south park.

Trump was an even bigger clown And even before Boris Johnson became PM, you had all the Brexit/UKIP/Nigel Farage shit.

Everything you said are the reasons why I'm not a fan of the current early 2020s culture. Maybe in the future (somehow), I'll wear my rose-tinted glasses and find the early 2020s to be more of an oasis to the probable calamities of later years from now. I hope that won't be the case, but I'm still not very optimistic about the future so far.

I'm on the fence about Billie Elish. In early 2020 we all thought she was the next big superstar but the she dropped off the face of the earth. I don't know if she will be remembered as an early 2020s icon. We'll see I guess.

I think she'll be mostly associated with 2019 in the future unless she comes back and becomes very prominent in pop culture again.

Her sophomore album in 2021 ( Happier Than Ever) wasn't quite as popular as her debut album ( When We Fall Asleep...) in 2019.

No now that I think about it since Billie Eilish peaked in 2020 she is more of a 2020s singer. Juice Wrld is also the pioneer of 2020s Hip Hop. His songs still get released after his passing. He is a true legend in modern day Hip Hop. He also peaked in 2020 after his passing.

I have another definition of the early 2020s: Every new streaming service has the "Max" or "Plus" labels on them, lol.

I have another definition of the early 2020s: Every new streaming service has the "Max" or "Plus" labels on them, lol. Everything IN GENERAL ends with plus nowadays. There's Disney+, Apple TV+, Paramount+. Walmart has a membership program called Walmart+. What's funny is the first tech product that used this naming scheme was one of the most infamous product failures of the 21st century: Google+.
