The system started off with games like Super Mario Land and Tetris in 1989 and lasted all the way until the Fall 2000 - Spring 2001 school year with Pokemon silver ( it was color and OG compatible) In many ways this system had the longest lifespan ever for a system. If Pokemon did not come around in 98 in the United States the system prob would have died sooner.

The original Gameboy's life span lasted until 1999, 2003 if you count the GB Color. The PS2 on its own lasted until 2013, with it's last game in North America being FIFA 14, and even the oringinal Wii (not the Wii U) continued getting games until 2020.

God of War 3 was like the last major game for that system with the rest being sports legacy updates.

I think much of that stemmed from there not being a true worthy successor or challenger to the Game Boy for a very long time. Even when the Game Boy Color came out, it was basically still just a glorified Game Boy. Other consoles existed, but were often too expensive or chewed up way too many batteries to be practical. Just a painful reminder that for most 90s kids, the most popular alternative to the Game Boy wasn't the Game Gear or Atari Lynx or anything like that. It was THIS
