Yes there was Emo & video games like Shadow the hedgehog amping it up with the "EXTREME edgelord" vibe" however if you reflect back to that time it was quite light. Not light in a early 2000s or early 2010s sense, but it was VERY dreamy and very fuzzy. The 80s revival was in full effect in late 2004 and you started seeing commercials look all "80s" This era was not perfect, it had things like the Iraq war & The election, however it was leaps and bounds lighter than other eras in the last 30 years.

The Mid 2000s were neutral at best. Not too light but not too dark. I would also include the Hurricane Katrina (and it’s aftermath) and the Asian Tsunami in 04. The Mid 2000s was in some sort of way was dark.

The mid 2000s were raunchy and edgy I don’t think it really qualifies as dark although torture porn horror like saw and hostel were in popularity during that time.

had a soft grit to it like rounded out but were not like the 90s I feel like the 90s were more family friendly than the 2000s. The 2000s had gangster vibe in the middle of the decade. The 2000s were made looking trashy be expensive. It’s basically the hood fabulous decade, it was also the decade where movies got more violent and graphic.

I think the reason a lot might describe the mid 2000s as dark is simply because they came straight after the early 2000s, which was a much more light-hearted and cheesy era for pop culture. People are just comparing the mid 2000s to that in my opinion.
