Did people think that the 90s were progressive when they were living it.
Did they have similar attitudes we have today about social issues and how they’ve gotten better but only after time has passed do we realize how far behind we were on things.
What we’re somethings people in the 90s thought they were progressive about but only later in time did we as a society realized we’re actually pretty backwards and ignorant of.

Didn't people start criticizing PC culture back in the 90s? I think it was a big talking point back then that people were becoming "too sensitive" but that kind of got forgotten after 9/11 when talks about terrorism took over politics.
Every decade feels progressive while they're happening, there's a lot of media from the 80s with people implying that racism was something that the US had moved past in the 1960s, and that the 80s were super progressive for black people, now we know that that was bullshit.
I think John Titor is the only user here who remembers most of the 90s though

This is definitely something thats always tough to get an exact reading on. Similar to 2020, 1992 saw protests and riots after the beating of Rodney King. Talk about police brutality was beginning to become more widespread. Also the 1994 CRIME BILL definitely wasn't progressive. I read a sociological study the other day that described the state and federal prison populations going up by 600% between 1970 and 2000. Thats 200,000 to 1.3 million. With 1986-2006 having the highest rates of incarceration. Also there was a lot more War on Drugs cringe back then. Weed? Definitely a gateway drug, I can already see thee needles in my arms. Nobody question brain damage from alcohol tho. Also Bill Clinton's sex scandal basically consisted of public harassment of Monica Lewinsky followed by no repercussions. The guy campaigned as a progressive but he only delivered austerity and basically ignored any labor movements. It was policies from Clinton and Bush jr who lead to the housing market collapse after all. Considering gay marriage is legal today (for now at least) its safe to say that people in the 90's were talking about the same issues we have today, accept they had WAAAAAY worse shit to say about said topics. I don't progressiveness truly caught on in the mainstream and legislation until the Obama era. Criticizing "PC" culture is a niche and nonspecific thing that crops up like every decade. Today's equivalent is just anti-woke fanatics with nothing better to do. Pre-2014 I feel like most people still didn't give an f. This Spike tv ad should give you a good idea of what the anti-pc crowd was like in 2000
