www.cnbc.com/2023/06/01/reddit-eyeing-ipo-charge-millions-in-fees-for-third-party-api-access.htmlStarting July 1st, social media site Reddit will be planning on charging 3rd-party software developers who want to use its site's API $20 million dollars. Reddit's announcement has gained negative reaction from its third-party developers (including the folks who makes its unofficial Reddit smartphone apps like Reddit Is Fun) and its users. The developers for the site's Apollo, Sync and Reddit Is Fun all announced two days ago that they will shut down their unofficial Reddit smartphone apps on July 1st due to them being unable to pay the huge price tag I mentioned. As for Reddit's users, I have read most of them online saying that they would stop using Reddit on July 1st if Reddit was to go ahead with its plan to charge its third-party developers $20 million dollars if they would like to use its site's API. To protest Reddit's decision to charge third-party developers 20 million dollars to use its site's API, moderators of a huge number of subreddits announced that their subreddits will be going dark for one day on June 12th. With this news being reported, things do not look good for Reddit. Speaking as someone who is a huge fan of Reddit and uses Reddit a lot, I would be very sad if Reddit was to go out of business as a result of them going ahead with their plan to charge 3rd-party developers $20 million dollars to use its site's API and the majority of its site's users stop going on the site because of it. I came to Reddit from Facebook. The reason why I stopped using Facebook and switched to Reddit is because Facebook is a drama-filled place. Unlike Facebook, Reddit is a peaceful place. I love everything about Reddit.

I hate this! my favorite reddit phone port is going to shutdown on June 30. There's no way I am going back to the vanilla app, It's absolute GARBAGE and drains my battery like crazy. Besides that, the search bar is unusable.
Seems like I'll have to get used to using reddit on my laptop, thankfully I have uBlock Origin, but the laptop version, though not as bad as the mobile vanilla version, is not as good as the mobile API app!!!
I am def not quitting reddit, it's way too usefu, it's kind of like a second YouTube to me at this point

I hope this whole situation doesn't result in Reddit going out of business. By the way, if Reddit was to go out of business as a result of Steve Huffman's bad business decision to require third-party developers to pay $20 million to use Reddit's API, then it would be the end of an era. The reason why I said that it would be the end of an era is because all of the new social media sites that are being created this decade are decentralized social media sites (For example, Mastodon).

John Titor, since you like to post on the r/generationology subreddit, I think you might want to read this post of mine.

I don't see reddit going out of business because of this, honestly. Let's be realistic, people will eventually get over it and these subreddits will open up again, assuming they don't back down from this new policy. This is different from the Digg situation, Reddit doesn't have a big competitor for reddit users to jump ship to. What pisses me of is how reddit refuses to just... MAKE A BETTER APP. Like, there's a reason people are downloading these reddit clients: it's because they're better than the vanilla app So logically all they have to do is just... make a better product instead of banning the competition I
