1980 is infamously known for being a bland and forgettable year for music. Disco (while still popular at the time) was clearly on its way out, and the rest of the charts were typically filled with dull adult-contemporary and yacht rock songs. Compared to the rest of the decade, 1980 really stands out as being pretty lackluster on the whole. It lacks the big, standout hits.
I would definitely agree that it was a pretty awful year for American music. I think it took a bit longer for the US to catch-on to the changing trends of the time. However, the UK and Australia (in particular) were producing some legitimately great songs at the time. It was the year that AC/DC released their comeback Back In Black album (which i'm not a fan of personally) and bands that would go onto define the decade like INXS, Icehouse etc. got their start during this year.
As a result, most of my song choices are actually Aussie songs:
1. "I Got You" - Split Enz 2. "Singing in the '80s" - The Monitors (this is a great new-wave, Aussie track that sounds ahead of it's time). 3. "Walls" - Icehouse 4. "Crazy Train" - Ozzy Osbourne 5. "Just Keep Walking" - INXS 6. "Bad Reputation" - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts 7. "We Can Get Together" - Icehouse 8. "Once in a Lifetime" - Talking Heads 9. "Can't Help Myself" - Icehouse 10. "Turning Japanese" - The Vapors
11. "Just Like (Starting Over)" - John Lennon 12. "Shaddap You Face" - Joe Dolce 13. "Another One Bites The Dust" - Queen 14. "Downhearted" - Australian Crawl 15. "Ashes to Ashes" - David Bowie 16. "Cheap Wine" - Cold Chisel 17. "Funkytown" - Lipps Inc. 18. "People" - Mi-Sex 19. "Modern Girl" - James Freud and the Radio Stars 20. "Space Invaders" - Player One (a quirky Aussie song about the video game).
