Despite Macklemore (which had a massive Pop appeal anyway) and some Eminem, I actually don't remember much Hip Hop being popular in 2013... Now that's something that changed a lot in 5 years . Yeah, there was definitely less hip-hop back then. The Top-40 charts were basically saturated with EDM, electropop and to a lesser extent, indie-pop songs.

How about the percentage of early '10s and mid '10s in the three parts of 2013? January - April: 90% Early 2010s, 10% Mid 2010s May - August: 75% Early 2010s, 25% Mid 2010s September - December: 50% Early 2010s, 50% Mid 2010s Sorry, but for me.... January-April: 60% Early 2010s, 40% Mid-2010s May-August: 35% Early 2010s, 65% Mid-2010s September-December: 15% Early 10s, 85% Mid-2010s

Tbh I don’t really agree with Late 2012/early 2013 being the “shift” from the early 10s to mid 10s. Indie and EDM music blew up in 2011. So did the Hipster fashion. Plus, there was still electropop around. Late 2013/early 2014 was when things are “shifting”. Late 2011 - Mid 2013 in my eyes is like a toned down early 10s. A lot of weight is placed on the decline of electropop (especially Gaga and Ke$ha), but less emphasis is placed on what remained the same or evolved slowly between the early '10s and the mid '10s. Though electropop was replaced by EDM and indie folk pretty suddenly, other genres such as hip-hop, R&B, and teen pop experienced more of a slow evolution. The political tension was amped up a notch at the end of 2012 when Obama was re-elected and the Trayvon Martin incident occurred, but the overall feel of the era had remained the same since the late 2000s. Momentum was predominantly on the side of liberalism, though an angry, hateful conservative backlash was slowly growing in the shadows that would rear its ugly head in 2016 and completely dominate the late '10s. Kesha had a #2 hit at the end of 2012 and Lady Gaga had a #4 song in late 2013. Electropop is a form of EDM, you are probably talking about the Progressive House trend that was dominating in 2013.

Just a bit of a reminder, decadeology is banned on Popedia. Further action will be taken if the discussion on the "percentages" of cultural eras continues.

2013 is definitely early not just in music, but everything else as well. For one, it was still 7th generation despite the Wii U already being out. The Xbone and PS4 weren't in stores until November. Cinema that year still had comedies such as Kick-ass 2, This is The End, Anchorman 2, The Hangover 3, A Haunted House, Bad Grandpa, and the To Do List. Plus, there were very little Superhero films besides Man of Steel, Iron Man 3, Wolverine, and Thor: The Dark World. TV shows of the day were Glee, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, New Girl, Modern Family, 2 Broke Girls and How I Met Your Mother. Hipster fashion may have risen to fame, but there was still some colorful apparel lingering around that year. For social media, Facebook was still on top along with Twitter, and Youtube as Instagram and Snapchat weren't on the radar just yet. As others mentioned before, it was politically still decent as it was pre-SJW/Alt-Right, pre-Trump, pre-BLM as well as there weren't numerous major attacks throughout the year except for the Boston Marathon Bombing. Tech wise, it was still the days when there was a variety of smartphone companies and not just Samsung and Apple. In addition, Blu-ray had not fizzled out yet and streaming movies, TV shows, music, etc was just starting to become popular.

I feel the first few months until maybe like May or June felt like the early 2010s but that last half in the fall felt like things were coming into their own

I just remembered this track by Lady Gaga were she tried to do go for a Trap song.
2013 was this weird year where it seemed that every major female pop artist (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Katy Perry) were trying to shift their sound towards Trap.

You can't help but wonder how Lady Gaga's and Katy Perry's careers would have panned out had they released "Jewels N' Drugs" and "Dark Horse" just a few years later (once Trap became ubiquitous). Would they have been more popular/successful than what they currently are or would people simply perceive them as being "out of touch" and jumping on the bandwagon? To be honest, it's probably for the best that both of those songs were released in 2013.

To be fair "Dark Horse" is closer to the Trap-EDM fusion trend of 2013-14 like "Harlem Shake" and "Turn Down for What" rather than the straightforward Trap sound of the mid-to-late 2010s, which she also later hopped on by the way: As for Lady Gaga, she recieved a pretty big backlash for her Dubstep-ridden Art Pop-album while trends were shifting heavily. Which I'm pretty is what pushed her towards the acoustic Pop direction for the rest of the decade which I think was for the better and in fact led to her "Shallow" consecration early this year.

2013 was not one of my favorite years of the 2010s along with 2015 and 2017. 2013 just felt dull to me in personal life. It's an underrated year if you ask me. The music and pop culture was good though.

2013 was a weird year but still a million times better than 2018/2019.
