Isn't 2013 when music went from dance pop to indie? I remember when I heard Royals by Lorde it felt like we were in another decade. And Blurred Lines sounded so different than pop songs from before. Yes music changed DRASTICALLY that year. There were still some holdovers like "I Don't Care" but music shifted extremely in spring of that year. I noticed the change when Justin Timberlake made his comeback in February of 2013 (this is when Thrift Shop was number 1). Others noticed it a little later in May of 2013 when Blurred Lines came out and songs like "Get Lucky" where hitting number 1.

towards the fall things started feeling different Earlier dude. Spring that year you felt a shift and that's when the word "Selfie" was coined as well and trends like "Harlem Shake" went viral. That's when Instagram replaced Facebook because people's grandmother's were on it, etc. 2013 ended popular shows like The Office. Also it was the end of the current Disney era of that time (Good Luck Charlie ended that year for example). It was a finale year and the end of an era. The shift was so big I actually noticed it while it was going on, not in hindsight. 2013 was quite a unique year since it didn't feel like the early 2010s but it didn't feel like the mid 2010s either. 2013 was the quintessential 2010s year. Pop culture exploded this year. This was also the best year of the 2010s by far for pop culture. You noticed a lot of 70s throwbacks this year since people were tired of the same old dance pop. You got more indie / hipster artists and bands on the scene like Lorde and Macklemore.

The 2013 shift seemed gradual to me. I could tell things were changing in spring but frmo what I recall it didn't fully feel like the mid 10s until the last quarter or third of the year and even then still there was that lingering early 10s residual that carried over into 2014.

I mean, the whole 70s throwback/disco revival thing wasn't even exclusive to 2013. It continued into the mid 2010s, with Uptown Funk in 2015 being the absolute peak. 2013 was a year that had early 2010s remnants, but it really did kickstart the mid 2010s. Netflix shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards came out this year. GTA V came out. PewDiePie became the biggest YouTuber, YouTube had its redesign. Vine blew up in popularity. The PS4 and Xbox One came out. iOS 7 and the iPhone 5S came out. BuzzFeed blew up this year. Black Lives Matter was founded. I thought Macklemore blew up in 2012 with his song Thrift Shop. You are right about Lorde though, she played a major role in popularizing indie/art pop, although you did have Lana Del Rey from 2012. Still, 2013 was before things like MLG memes blowing up, Filthy Frank blowing up, Gamergate, Five Nights at Freddys, the Ferguson riots, the Apple Watch came out, YouTubers like Markiplier and JackSepticEye blew up. For me, I'd say 2015 or 2016 was peak 2010s.

Do you not know that Thrift Shop is the number 1 song of 2013 according to Billboard? NOT 2012? It blew up in early 2013. And you are dead wrong about 70s throwbacks being big all throughout the mid 2010s. Name one 70s throwback in 2014 besides Uptown Funk? It got huge in 2013. 2013 was a unique year.

No Lip Kit ? No Jenner obsession ? No Star Wars new Trilogy hysteria ? No Pokemon GO ? No None of these classic 2010s things were at their peak in 2013, what did 2013 have that 2014,2015 and even 2016 didn't ?

Ok let me ask everyone here, is 2013 or 2015 more 2010s ?

When people hear "2010s" most people think of Lady Gaga, Angry Birds, dance pop, etc. Stuff from the early 2010s.
